Where did this ECU come from?
Ok, I have a 1987 Toyota 4runner 4x4 EFI with an 87 matched 22RE block and head. I am not the original owner and the P.O's apparently did quite some switching as the transmission is apparently sourced from a turbo setup.
The main issue now though is the ECU in this truck. I have been getting strange code issues since owning the vehicle with the old 22re that was in it til it blew and even now with a freshly built and matched 87 22re. So I am now suspect of the ECU itself and upon removal and a little searching, I am not even sure what computer I have. Check out the pictures. So apparently, this is a computer for a 22R. Early model 4runner computer, I think right?
Next question then, if I am to replace this computer, what options are available as far as ECU's? This has the 3-plug terminal and matches the main harness in the truck itself. What year span can I use, or do I need 87 in particular? I just always get lost when I'm not even starting from stock because I can't really match up if the match wasn't good in the first place.
What is this particular computer for and what computer can I switch over to? Thanks much

I think you have the right ECU. The 85-88 ECUs had 22R written on them, I think. so 85-88 ECU are interchangeable. 89-90 22re ECU have 22R-E written on them. I have a 1990 Pickup and it says 22R-E in red on it.
If it helps, you can see these EBAY listing for 85-88 ECUs, they all say 22R:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/88-To...item5d2870dcfd
anotherone:
http://global.ebay.com/85_86_87_Toyo...448371012/item
22R engine ECU plugs are different than 22RE wire harness, but not sure
From the chart, it seems that should have 1986-87 ECU: 89661-35070
Hope this helps.

Hgill,
Thanks much, that is very helpful information though it doesn't help me in the way I hoped it would. I was hoping it would be obvious that this computer isn't the best one for this truck and I could buy a solution. But it seems I already have the physical part I need so now I once again am not sure where the breakdown is. Is there a way to check the computer itself for good working order?
Local yard has a computer out of an '86 4runner efi 4x4 non-turbo for $45 as-is. That should be compatible then according to the chart, yeah? Anyway to make sure the computer I am buying is worth a lick either?

You can test the current ECU/ECM by following the Voltage and resistance test in the FSM using a multi-meter.
For example, if you see the 1993 Toyota FSM for 22re->Engine->ECM
http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1993/engine/44engin.pdf
It has two tests, voltage and resistance, you measure the voltages to make sure all the pins are working and the internal ECU logic is working as well.
Would be much easier to just plug-in another ECU and find out. Is there someone near where you live with the same truck, so you could just plug-in their ECU, maybe.
