Hey yotatech, I'm having a problem starting my 90 4runner I thought that maybe it was the battery so I got a new battery, hooked it up Nd turned the key, it just won't turn over on the first try. Then I turn key again and it starts right up. Fuel pump? Or something else? Help!

It wants to start. It seems like its not getting fuel.

spray some starting fluid in it to see if it starts. If it does you have a fuel problem. if not you have an electrical problem. and what motor do you have???

when you turn the key can you hear the fuel pump running in the tank? it will cycle on for about 5 seconds each time the key turns on. When is the last time you changed the fuel filter??

I've been corrected for saying that before, your turn

The engine has to suck some air thru the AFM to switch on the pump, it's not activated by the key turned to ON.

What happens if you crank for a little bit longer or depress the gas pedal while starting?

There are three places the fuel pressure could be leaving the rail while sitting the pump it's self, the pressure regulator, or thru the injectors.

If I crank it a little longer and give it a little fuel it wi usually start but not all the time. Probably 70% of the time

Cranking it a little longer while giving a little gas will start it about 70% of the time. If it doesn't I just turn the key to lock then crank again and it will start right up.

When it catches, does it sputter at a low RPM or does it idle normally? ~ 750RPM

Lol sorry my app was being retarded. It does sputter for a couple seconds then goes to a Nola idle.

So you could possibly be getting too much fuel. Does it start any better when it has been sitting for a long time? ie. First start, after school/work etc. If so, it may be the Cold Start Injector being stuck open, or the CSI time switch or Engine coolant temp sensor. They all in a way, decide how much fuel the engine needs and if they are faulty, you can flood your engine. Check those.

It could also. possibly, be the Fuel Pressure regulator. . Does it ever stall at stop lights or when you turn the AC on?

The sputter, to me, suggests a fuel related issue. HOWEVER, something you should do that I have not read yet is check for codes!

It never stalls at lights or stop signs. It will start up first try, sometimes like 30% of the time. Ill check those and check codes.
