cheap and power are mutually exclusive concepts

i have found with the 22 re, beyond a few basic mods, you can spend a lot for not that much more power, you want beans save for a chevy 350 swap.

Advance the timing a few degrees and run higher octane fuel.

I'll just say this... my current 22re rebuild in progress is costing my well over $1,500, and once done the truck will have a head with over-sized valves for better flow, an LCE intake tube (not to be confused with a cold air intake; the kit retains the stock filter box), .03 over bore, and PaceSetter exhaust from header to tip, and I expect to see under 150hp still...

Do you understand that running higher octane fuel, in and of itself, will do nothing to increase the engine power ?

Perhaps, but advancing the timing may cause it to ping and the higher octane fuel may address that, to a point.

Yes, that's correct. In my case, running the 3.0 I have advanced mine to 15* BTC with no problem(s), still running regular. The 3.0 does have a knock sensor. I don't know about the 22re.
In general, running higher octane fuel in an engine that doesn't require it will cause the engine to actually produce a little less power, certainly not more.
Basically all that higher octane fuel does is burn slower.

precisely my point. If you advance the timing you need to higher octane to advance to the point of benefit. Usually I will advance to the point of pre ignition then back it off very slightly untill it is eliminated. Then run a higher octane fuel to ensure I am not getting pre ignition since it has more compression resistance. When I have done this myself with the 22re I have always gotten very noticeable response gains (not necessarily power gains). Anyway like the tittle says for a 2.4l 22re not a 3.0l 3zve.

its kind off pretentious to assume that it is a coincidence that suggesting timing advance and higher octane fuel in the same sentence have nothing to do with each other.

Take the hood, fenders, doors, spare and bed off and tell the passenger to get out then only run one (1) gallon of gas at a time and I gaurentee you'll have better 0-60 times.

These mods should cost you nothing, unless your truck gets impounded for looking like an abandoned vehicle.

Twaddle,.......... keep it near stock, keep it simple. Thats the reason for the 22re's longevity,OEM. Now, not to say i have not modified mine, but after 22 years its still a daily driver, what can i say. Just me .
