Wow sb5, thanks for all of that detailed info! I'm sure your experiences may save myself and others some frustration from having to do the first time guesses.

Speaking of that pulley tool you guys make, is taht required or can I stick my tranny in say 3rd or 5th gear to hold the motor still, assuming I am only taking off the crank bolt and not the cam bolts?

I have heard of people doing that, but I cringe when I read it. 181 ft lbs is a lot of torque. The strap wrench is really easy to make, out of the old timing belt, a 2x4, and a couple lag bolts, and it does a good job, That's what I would recommend. Useful for other tasks, too.

Ok well, I'll make one up and stop being lazy lol. Still, it's better than the starter motor method as far as I can tell haha.

Actually *full disclosure* I do use the starter method to remove the pulley bolt. I know, I'm inconsistent. But it's so easy! Anyway, you won't have access to the belt at that point, so unless you have another belt to make the strap wrench, that's not an option. I just use it for torquing the bolt at the end.

Eh well, you're still dishing out good info, consistent or not

I'm still going to make up something to help get that bolt on and off. I haven't settled on what kind yet, it's simply a matter of what kind of junk I have laying around the garage.

I have a few days to scheme and plan it. Rock auto has great prices but shipping is not so speedy. I hope my leaking water pump holds out for another week or so until all the parts come in.

I hope this puts and end to repair work for a while. I did the ball joints and cv boots a few weeks ago. I took it in to toyota for the service bullitin for the center link on the steering. The tie rods were old so they gave me new ones for free, installed + free alignment. So a good chuck of my steering and suspension is new.

I have a rough idea of how to make a tool like this, but do you have a picture or a more detailed instruction? Sounds like something I would like to throw together just to have in the garage (and by garage I mean the lawn mower shed because I don't really have a garage - lol!)

True. The 89 doesn't have one from the factory. But it could have one...if someone wanted it to.

Incorrect, you can't put the hydraulic tensioner on the 88-8/92 3VZE. The 88-8/92 no.1 idler pulley is different and would need replaced with the 8/92-95 idler pulley also. And the mounting points for the hydraulic tensioner on the 88-8/92 fan pulley bracket are non-existent. So you'd have to replace it with the 8/92-95 fan pulley bracket too.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I am balls deep in this job now. The reason you can't go to a hydraulic tensioner for a pre 8/92 3vze is the fan idler bracket doesn't have the mounts for the hydraulic tensioner, and obviously the #2 idler pulley (the #1 idler pulley is 13502 in the exploded view diagram above) has an arm to hold one end of the spring.

My spring measured close to 2.5" free length and per the spec it should be 2.22" for '92, so I am looking to replace it. (By the way, it's closer to 2.1" for earlier models) Having an old, corroded, stretched out tensioner spring seems like it could be cause to have to get back into the timing cover at some point, so I'm just going to have to find this spring.

Trying to find a replacement spring for mine now (which, mine is a '93 T4R, but apparently built pre 8/92 because I have the spring tensioner setup) and it is a real pain. I've found one that comes in a kit from Dayco (The kit is P/N 84040) and it has the spring (Dayco 85809) but they don't sell the spring itself. I found it through Autozone (P/N 9907) but they have to special order it. Rockauto doesn't seem to have it by itself. I did find it it on Nextdayauto.com (P/N WX-4906919) in case the link breaks in the future.

Thanks, I found the one at Autozone.

I think any 2 1/4" spring would probably work just fine. It seems like it's going to pull the lower idler pulley all the way to the inside of the slot when I install it, so I don't know that the spring is really doing a whole heck of a lot that won't get done by tightening down the idler pulley bolt with it cocked all the way over in the slot where the spring will put it.

BY THE WAY, folks. I researched this job for EVER and in only one post after several days of looking did I find the actual tool Toyota uses to remove and install the harmonic balancer. (Maybe that's saying something about my researching skills, but I think I've been pretty thorough.) The proper tool for the HB on a 3VZE is SCH64300 (SCH64400 for 5VZFE). You can order it through Sears or Carquest/Advanced. They are also on Amazon and ebay for ~ $60-80.

I'm going to try to build a tool using the pivoting metal bar or the wood block/old timing belt methods. Picked up all the parts for both tools for ~$25.
