Ok here is the situation, two days ago I bought a 86 2wd auto longbed out of the newspaper (not a dealer). It was running perfect when I test drove it but now the transmission is blown aka. slippin like crazy. I dont know what i am gonna do with this truck now because I bought it to haul stuff and its gonna cost me 1200 for a new tranny which is more than i paid for the truck in the first place, so here are my options ...

1. Find a replacement auto tranny do the work myself
2. Find a manual tranny and swap it out (i really wanted a manual in the first place but i cant find any info about swaps)
3. Part out the car as it has a 22r in good shape and a good interior
4. Drive it off a cliff and say f' it

I am leaning toward parting it out or selling as a whole but if i could find some info about manual swaps i would consider keepin it. SO the million dollar question is WWYD?

Well it depends on how mechanicly inclined you are.
The best way to do a manual tranny swap is to find a donar truck so you will have everything you need.

Part it out or drive it off a cliff and say ˟˟˟˟˟ it! I would part it out, you would make your money back that way and maybe a little more!

22re engine? What tranny do you need? I have a couple 2wd autos that are no good to me, not sure of year? How can I tell? Maybe yours is an easy rebuild of clutches and gasket set? Dont junk it yet! Where are you located, PM me if you want. Mike

you dont make much money from 4x2 trucks. Plus, people are super stingy and never want to pay your price, no matter how low it is. parting out a truck is a long tedious process, and not really worth it for the old Toyota Trucks.

Find a used tranny i'd say. btw, is your fluid level ok?

Deathcougar - tranny level is good and fluid looks like its suppose to. I really dont want to part it out but the junkyards are offering me only 200 bucks for it so I am considering it.
chopitrakeit - The engine is carborated so that makes it a 22r right? and I sent you a PM
Jay351- How mechanically inclined would you have to be to manage to do this? I changed turbos in my old celica alltrac and I just recently changed a my starter on my sc400. I have never dropped an engine or trans before and I would assume I would have to do this for this job.
91TPU - I got a quote from a local salvage yard 400 bucks for a manual trans, complete swap 5sp. Is that a good price?

If i did swap it to a manual would my resale be a little higher? Thanks to everyone for all the replies

Go for the manual swap. And I second what was said about just buying the donor truck. My brother did the swap in his 85 and he paid $500 for an 86 that was knocking like crazy (I drove it home and made it about 2 miles from the house before it gave way). Then he sold the truck for $300 to a guy that wanted it for parts.

Well im really not the guy to be asking but there are a few guys on here that HAVE done a auto>manual swap, its more just of a long project I suppose, you need to cut the floor open more, make sure your driveshaft will fit, install clutch pedal, master cylender etc.etc.

Auto to manual is a lot of work. I haven't done it, but I owned a car that had been converted, and there were a lot of things that just weren't quite right... Your truck will be a bit easier since it's carb'ed, but it's still more work than it's probably worth. I'd look for a cheap used auto tranny and swap it out.

P.S. I've got an '86 2wd with an auto, and I love it!

Its not hard to drop a motor and tranny if I can do it on my truck then a two wheel drive will be easy its lower then a 4x4 and it doesn't have a transfer case. I never worked on cars before my first car and I did it okay with out most of the tools. All i had was a socket set and a wrench set and a rubber mallet thats it, and I went by drawings form a junkyard donor. I would leave it auto.
