What transfer case will work for a turbo 4runner?

I have an 86 4runner sr5 Turbo with the auto tranny. My mechanic said the part of my transfer case where it attaches with the driveshaft is all messed up. Can this be easily rebuilt or should I just get a used replacement. If I replace it what transfer case will work for that auto tranny? Do I have to get one that's specific to the turbo sr5 model or will one from a standard 4 cylinder model of same year work?

rut roe...

I just remembered the A340H has the integral TC....

Just get an A340H out of a V6 4Runner (there are a blue million) but YOU MUST use the torque converter and bellhousing you have now.

The rest of the computers for the OD and shift points should be inside the truck.

"Bellhousing info-
Bellhousings for the 3VZE and 22RE can be swapped, but are specific to their respective torque converters. 22RE is about 2000rpm stall, 3VZE is 2800. There are six bolts attaching the torque converter to the flexplate. When installing a Toyota auto trans, note that one of these six bolts is different and has a small shoulder. Install this one first and it will align all the holes so you can fully tighten each one without having to turn over the motor twice."

Or... Swap it for the better, A340f.

Right now I'd prefer to just get a transfer case that works, I just had the flex plate on my existing auto tranny replaced so I want to keep it simple and cheap. So you're saying the transfer case from the later model 90+ 4runner sr5 V6 will work? The torque converter and bellhousing are part of the tranny right? Sorry but I know cars and turbos but don't know about trucks and 4x4.

Sorry, but the H case is made on to the A340... The TC does not "bolt on".

And even if it does, you'll be better off finding and swapping the tranny/TC anyway, than paying a guy $60 per hour to repair the existing tranny you got.

I have no 1st hand knowledge b/c I haven't had to, but if Pirate says all you need is the bellhousing and torque converter, then I believe them.

Like I've said, you got some options... The hardest part IMO will be finding an A340... Which is not hard to me.

Let me put it to you like this, just find a Toyota with A340H on the ID plate, and it's basically a bolt-in.

If you want the better f, see the link in my 2nd post.

A340H's will be in any V6 truck or 4Runner.
A340f's will be in 22R/E trucks and 4Runers.

A340 is the transmission.
H is "Hydraulic" transfercase
f is the "four wheel drive" IF I recall correctly.

The H case sucks..

"Why are vehicles with the Toyota A340H trans/t-case so gutless?
(Compared to their 5 speed counterparts with the same motor). Normally, an auto tranny both consumes power and mutiplies torque. In the case of the A340H, the power consumption is doubled by the addition of the hydraulic transfer case, which is essentially like having another automatic transmission inline. But the torque multiplication of the single torque converter isn't enough to compensate for the additional drag. A simple though exspensive solution is to replace the hydraulic chain driven transfer case with a gear driven one. Inchworm and Gearslug are some of the only vendors that make an adapter for this application. People who have performed this mod report increased mileage and performance, most likely due to the elimination of the additional drag of the hydraulic t-case. Note that the chain drive case has a 2.66 to 1 low range so going to a single stock gear drive case will lose some gear reduction."

I wish I could see the thing...

If you've got a blowed bearing, and that's all, you MIGHT can take the front flange and bearing retainer out and put another one back in.

Buy I've NEVER heard of a problem like this before, so that's highly speculative.

Got any pics?

Yeah from what I've heard, the transfer case is bulletproof. I'm taking the word of my mechanic, I didn't even look at it. I'm going to the shop today so I'll see if I can't get a pic. It's supposed to be where it bolts to the front driveshaft that it's all messed up, so maybe the flange and bearing. I've tried a bunch of places and so far I can't find a used one or a place to rebuild it.
