I searched and could not find any solid info on what thermostat to use in a 22re. My 4Runner is a 1987 SR5 is that makes any difference. The current thermostat is a 180 and it had a 195 in it before. With the onset of winter, I was thinking a 195 would be better?

Stick with the 180. It'll keep your engine cooler, and besides, in the Winter your fan will not come on anyway.

Does the temp of the engine effect how it idles? It seemed to be fine when it was 90 and above, but lately with 60 and below temps, it seems to idle a little funny. I was wondering if it had to do with the 180 vs. the 195?

It's possible. If you are using A/C when it is 90+ degrees outside, the A/C will bump the idle up a few hundred RPM usually. Otherwise, the cooler thermostat should help make you engine run cooler, and therefore, last longer, and perform better.

Thanks for the reply. I will stick with the 180 for now and see if that makes any diff when it really gets cold out.

what i do is use 180 in the summer and 195 in the winter... seems to work good.

well, in the summer, it gets about 115-120 out here, so the 180 keeps it a tad cooler, the one time i tried the 195 in the summer the truck got hot real quick and the gas mileage dropped to maybe 10 per gallon... not sure why. not that gas is great out here in summer for anything... even with the 195 i only get maybe 15 or 16.. in the winter it drops to maybe low 30s or low 40s, and if i dont use the 195 it takes a long time to warm up. about performance here are the differences: summer: 180 - top speed 90, 195 - top speed 75. winter: 180 - top speed 85, 195 - top speed 110. its not easy getting the 22re up to 110mph anyway... it involves lots of hills.. (goin down them). see how it does, i only do this because of the extreme temps out here. hope that answers your question..
