it connects to the Exhaust manifold. I thought it was called a downpipe.
I need a new one or I'm going to have to weld this one back together.

It's for a 1986 toyota pickup Sr5 extended cab 22re engine.

Everything i look at one line looks different. I hope this is not custom think i have here.

I would call it a downpipe but the factory may not. Looks stock to me too.

The 22r had a twin tube. Is that what you were seeing?

I call it the "Y" pipe, not sure of the correct name of it. It is a factory part. I have seen other pipes where the two pipes coming off of the flange extends into one about 3 feet further down. If it was me I would just have it welded back up or get one at the boneyard. They come in two styles and have yet to determine why the difference.

Napa has a exhaust pipe listed for your year they just call it the front exhaust pipe.

Welding that is going to be a real pain because of the thermal cycling .

The heating and cooling if the filler metal does not expand and contract at the same rate as the base metal it will keep cracking .

I'd call it the downpipe/y-pipe. There are several styles like mentioned. Mine cracked in the exact same spot and got about 3/4 circumference on my 93 and also a little bit in the crotch of the y itself.

I looked online and there were no options for a new part that I could find, only a long tube header that eliminates it. I also inquired with local shops and nobody wanted to fabricate this part for me because it's difficult and specific layout and close to motor and trans, blah blah blah so they all said. Ended up welding it back together as my only option and all good after maybe 3yrs. Good luck

Here is another style of the pipe. I don't know if it goes to a 2 or 4 wheel drive or a change that Toyota made during a year change. You will see the one you have and the one I have in the picture on the 22 motor. It may even be the difference for a carb or EFI motor.

I don't know if it makes a difference but in my mind this pipe would be better for air flow but no way to test it. Anyways, just another pipe to make you aware of.

I got it out. Here is a better look.
It looks like some one already had the idea to welded it..
I'm not sure what to do right now. . But I I might try welding it, But I think the whole thing needs to be replaced.

I welded it, Painted it black for now, After I get the engine put back together I will have a shop fix it right. But I got to say the weld looks pretty good painted black down in that dark hole.

a second repair weld might not hold. you can only weld so much to a peice of metalbefore it's not much good. my 86 2wd has the long tube y pipe, even a spare. i think they probably have better tuning of the tri-y design. biggest factor, though, is the bracket that attaches to the trans. it is there to prevent problems in this area.
