EGR Gas Temp Sensor.

I believe that is only on California trucks, but whether that's correct or not, it doesn't look like your casting is threaded for one. So you probably never had one, and your ECM doesn't look for it.

It's purpose is a sanity check of your EGR system. At several points, your EGR ducts exhaust gas back through that tube to the intake (which has the effect of reducing max combustion temperature, which reduces NOx formation.) Is the EGR valve clogged? Vacuum lines disconnected? The temp sensor looks for that warm exhaust gas, and if it doesn't find it when it should, throws code 71.

In your case, you'll have to wait until you fail smog.

I think they're all threaded. Both of mine are. And neither had a sensor from the factory. So I know the threads being there doesn't necessarily mean the sensor needs to be there.

I wish, but thanks! I'm going to detail it tomorrow and also search for a wiring problem. One of my power steering lines is leaking, so, I have to do that some time.

It has 164,000 miles, Toyota dealer did the head gasket at about 85,000 miles. We'll see how long it goes.

I see California models with the sensor in it but the Fed model doesn't. I am not positive but it seems like the newer trucks (94 and up?) the sensor became standard equipment.

I had a California model and it had the O2 sensor in the EGR and if I recall right it had a down stream O2 sensor as well. Not sure if that means if all EGRs with the sensor has a down steam O2 sensor or not.
