What are the most commoin 1st gen 4runner brake upgrades?
So I was on a budget and desperately had to do my rear brake shoes last week. Got everything apart and found out I need new wheel cylinders and drums also. I slapped the 10 dollar shoes on there and put em back together.
I also know I need new brake pads up front soon, my calipers seem to be sticking, it pulls when braking, and a leaky master cylinder to top it all off.
I looks like I might be needing almost a complete brake component overhaul.
But why replace them with the same kind? Like I remember reading something about being able to use V6 calipers up front? Or v6 master cylinder?
What are all the mods out there?!?! I work for a parts store, so my prices are awesome on almost everything, and we mostly sell Raybestos, centric, and can get all the napa stuff. Thats why I figured I could spend the little extra money and get new parts.

"v6" calipers, "v6" Dual diaphragm booster and a 1" "v6" master cyl. I keep "v6" in quotes as most later model 4cyl got the same stuff. IMO don't use a 1" master on a stock single diaphragm booster, mine resulted in a harder feeling pedal till I put in the dual. Also I personally wouldn't use the v6 calipers with a non 1" master. What I am not sure about is whether or not the v6 calipers require a different rotor then stock. I wanna say no, but I could be wrong as I haven't upgraded my calipers yet, just the booster and master. The master I got from autozone and was meant for a v6 T-100. The booster I pulled from a junk yard from a 3.0 95 pickup.

see my sig for rig info. and unless the previous owner did them I am almost certain you do not have the above mentioned stuff.
The hardest part is bleeding the brakes when changing master cyls. In which I hate, I never get it right the first time. Even with doing the required bench bleed on the master.

yeah, I was trying to understand how the whole bleeding the brakes works and everything. That I will probably have a mechanic buddy help me with.
Hey, I grew up outside of Bangor, PA. Lower Mount Bethel township. I miss that area. I recall Wilkes-Barre, PA not being to far?

Yes, you need to replace the rotors to go along with T100 calipers

FWIW - 1" master cylinder with stock calipers is fine, just makes the pedal a bit firmer & my brake pedal is OK without the dual diaphragm booster (couldn't fit it on my truck even if I wanted to)

After you have built some confidence from doing the front brakes. You can get some brackets and put your old front brakes on the rear, and have full disk brakes.

Corax I wasn't mentioning the t-100 calipers but just between the 4cyl and 3.0 style calipers. I had actually forgot about them as an option. A little more work I guess, but a better option.

This surprises me. After AZ sorted out the defective MC they gave me, installing the 1" MC and dual diaphram booster was a breeze. Bench bled, then had someone help me bleed it on the truck, no problems so far .

haa yeah I know it should be easy. But for some stupid reason it kicks my butt. And I always bleed in the proper sequence etc etc and use the one man bleeder kit as I am 90% of the time doing it myself.

I went into work and checked the parts in out computer system(same as NAPA online). Yep they are the same
thank you for all the clarification. Next weekend I might begin tackling this. I might do a write up, since there weren't very many when I was searching(beside the links posted here)
I'm going to assume that with different calipers and rotors, I will also need the bigger brake pads?
Next step is to do some research on rear disc brake swap. I don't want to spend 400 dollars on the kit, so Im going to find out if I can get the brackets alone and find out what type of vehicle the calipers, pads and rotors go on
