what gears do you run with 35's

what gears do you run with 35's
I know everyong is going to yell RUN 5.29's MINIMUM. But wondering if anyone has any other expirence running maybe 4.88's or 4.56's with 35" tires. What was your motor/trans combo, how did it run.
Basically, I was running a v6/auto/4.56 on 33x12.5, it wasn't a rocket ship. Put in a 5spd.... now I could pass on the highway without a mile long run at it. So my figuring is that with the now 5spd and 35's that I will be back to the feeling of my original setup... no?

it'll be close, 4.88's would be better and of course, 5.29's would be best. If your running the 35's now with the setup in question and are happy with it, stay with it. Who cares what we tell you if your happy.

First - are you sure it was 4.56 with the auto? That would be an unusual combination...
Also, is this a truck or a 4Runner - because the weight difference has a HUGE effect.
Here's my experience with gears/tire sizes behind my 3.0's:
4.56 with 33's wasn't bad, but I could tell I was putting more wear on the clutch, as it was a noticeable difference from the 31's starting on a hill. It had a helluva time holding the gear on rolling hills on the freeway unless you were doing like 90 MPH. Gas mileage suffered because the pedal was on the floor all the time.
Went to 4.88's and night and day difference. Starting out was almost like stock, and the truck was in the bottom of the powerband, so it would hold 5th at "normal" speeds.
Converesely, the other rig has 5.71's and an automatic. Gets started great, but won't EVER hold the overdrive, and had to install a tranny cooler because the overtemp light was on all the time in the mountains.
So, to sum up, IMHO, 4.56 with 35's on a highway driven rig are gonna SUCK huge. Gas mileage is going to suffer terribly, and you're basically turning your 5 speed into a 4 speed. Since you need to regear, you may as well go with 5.29's.

I'm running 36x12.50 MT's 4.88 gears with 5spd 3.0. Its excellent, the truck does not hesitate on acceleration and holds fifth even on an incline. I dont think I would switch to 5.29's unless I move up to 38's.

This is what I figure also. with the 33's and 5spd I was holding 5th no problem on any highway hill, to pass, I'd down shift. that's why I figure with the 35's I will be somewhere in the auto/33 range.
BTW anyone that hates their 3.0 and has a auto hooked up to it, the 5spd swap is like a whole new motor!

I had 4.88's with 33's and would not have considered 35's with out dropping 5.29's on my previous 5 speed 4runner. I should add I had the 3.0 and live in a hilly area with high free speeds.

I followed the knowledgeable advice of fellow wheeling buddies and regeared with 4.88's and 35's. No regrets whatsoever on the pavement and with a 4.7 transfer case I'm very happy with it offroad. (The PO had spent big $$$ on a fresh dealership motor rebuild that included a thousand bucks worth of LCE parts.)

Sorry to bump an old thread but its good to see someone from victoria on the forum.
Anyways,
I was running 35's with 4.56's and a swapped 3.4L
It sucked so much that I remounted the 32's until I get a set of 5.29's

Well i'm rockin the 35's right now with 4.56's and it seems to be the same as when i had 33's and the auto, in town driving is just fine, highway i stay in 4th unless I have a nice flat section. Buy deff going 5.29's! got them ordered along with a sas kit! It's going to be a good spring project

Funny story is I work with one of your buddies (Dan) at the local mazda dealer just met him today and we were talking about 4runners and he mentioned you, lol small world
about the 4.56's im pretty sure you have 4.88's because the auto comes with those (unless it didnt have 31" tire pkg?). I just ordered my 5.29's for the rear tonight and im still up in the air with getting 5.29's for the 7.5" or just getting 5.29's for an 8" with a sas.
Only problem is my frame is bent at the front crossmember from an accident.

With a 3.0 you want to be running 3000 rpm at between 60 and 65 mph in overdrive to keep from gear hunting on the highway.
And you don't need to be doing 80-90 on 35's anyway.

since we're on this subject....i was wondering how incredibly bad it would be to run 33x13.50's with stock 4.10's in my '80 4x4 with the 20R..all stock...no mods or anything..well besides a header and im fixin to get a rebuilt carb...but thats it...how hard would it be to turn those big heavy ass tires...i mainly just do mud..thats why i want such a wide tire...i LOVE to sling my mud...would it have the power to sling it...cuz if not....then lol

Ya 4Mogger I took drag into account. Im going to be running 37s with 5.71 3.0 5 spd and its going to be slightly lowing than stock meaning higher rpms for same speed.
