what gear ratio should i go with for my 22re?

I don't need to run massive tires I'm going to settle at 31's but with the stock tires it struggles up hills on the highway so I figured gearing would help.

My 22re manual ran 31s with 4.10s just fine.

x2 to BluePile. I'm running 31's with 4.10's also.

If you run 31's with 4.56 gears you'll stay right around stock figures. You can bump it up to 4.88's with the 31's. That would raise your RPMs (lower fuel mileage) and get you more into the torque-band for the engine at a lower speed and get you some pep under your foot.

It's a standard, I had it pinned in third today on the highway up a hill and it barely kept at 40. How much would it cost to get 4.88's?

Pinned in 3rd up a hill at 40 sounds like you are missing power else ware. When I first got my 93 w/22re and a manual 4:10 gears. I had the same issues on our local mountain passes. But after getting a properly functioning exhaust it mad a HUGE difference. Check to make sure your isn't full of leaks and or plugged up. Also full tune up. Use good parts 22re's don't seem to like Bosh much despite what the parts store tells you. Get an oem cap rotor plugs and wires make sure your exhaust is good and see what happens. If you have to do all that exhaust and tune up it will still be less than one set of gears unless you can do them yourself. Just food for thought.

It just seems that 3rd gear at 40 is something else causing power loss not just lack of gearing. I run 31 inch Toyo open country mt's. They tend to be heavier than most standard 31's and virtually any hill I hit in 3rd I can run easily up to the low 50's before I shift in to 4th and hold my rpm around 3k and that usually holds my speed fine on the steep hills. And most of our maintain passes I can do 60 over in 4th with out working too hard.

x2 My '85 running 31's and 4.10's will keep 55mph in 5th gear up our steepest hill here. You have power loss somewhere.

I just did a tune up when I changed my head gasket. The only exhaust leak is in a bad weld by the muffler but it isn't real bad more like a pin hole. The manifold shouldnt be leaking the gasket was just changed and I don't see anything burnt nearby. Another thing is my dad said they had a 2x4 22re and it was a badass little truck and later got a 4x4 and said it was gutless on the highway. I dont see how they can be so different but what are yours.

Somethings wrong....I run 32's with 4.10s and only struggle in 5th up steep hills. Maybe valves werent adjusted right when head gasket was changed?

The Valves werent far off when I adjusted them after the head gasket. Where else could I have lost so much power, new plugs and wires, new muffler, and no leaks except the one by the muffler. I'm starting to kind of think fuel injectors. How bad are they to replace?

It sounds like you've got some major power loss somewhere. Have you done a compression check?

Besides possible other issues, I'm a bit lost here, 31's with 410's is crap but tolerable, or are we really saying 31's and 410's is just fine?

IMO, when I got my 31's with 410's I hated my trucks face and it wasn't fun at all.....just sayin. It's already slow 31's will make it slower.

The guy who had it before me stripped the first cylinder so I didn't really want to screw the comp tester into it. It's making a clicking noise so I looked it up and heard injectors can make some noise opening and. Closing. Im not sure exactly how to check them though. I hope its something simple. I don't think it's the timing chain either, I could see down to the guide when I changed out a hg and it didn't look bad

This is my first Yota and I've only ever had 31's on it so I don't have anything to compare it to. I'm satisfied with how it runs. It does slow down going up grades, but that's expected and it doesn't seem excessive to me. Maybe once I get my lift, 33's and swap to 4.88's I'll change my opinion, but for now I'm satisfied with it.

If you're worried about the spark plug hole being stripped you should get that fixed. It's better to mess somthing up so you can fix it than to let it continue on just a little messed up for a long time. Also, pick up a stethescope. It'll help a lot with finding noises. They're pretty cheap too. You can do the same thing with a long screwdriver, but a stethescope is better.

I run 4.10 and 32" BFG ATs in my 4runner (87). Was a little sluggish up hills and I'm sur the heavy tires and 4" lift didn't help.

I've since done:
LCE header and pro flow exhaust
cold air intake/battery swap
new ENGNBLDR Street RV head/268* cam
Cleaned injectors
New plugs/etc/timing/valves

It's MUCH peppier than before (I did the head work and cleaned injectors a few months ago and really noticed a difference then).

My guess is that maybe you have a clogged injector or bad compression, as suggested above. My truck was stock except the lift and tires a few years ago and it was sluggish, but not bad like you're saying.
