After $1600 and two transmissions, go to Marlin.. I sure hope that $800 fee included pull out and install - there's a shop here that would flat-fee rebuild for $300.
Marlin can provide you with a HD version of that transmission - bigger bearings and alternet gearsets. No, they're not cheap ~$1k - but it'll be the last transmission you ever need...

Last I recall (almost 10 years ago BTW)
Junkyard wanted $400-$500 for a W56 tranny with a "warranty" (meaning if it was broken you could get yer money back but labor was your problem). Back in those days - $800 or so got you a rebuilt Marlin tranny - DONE RIGHT. Or you could be dumb (like I was) and get it rebuilt local for $900+ (and I brought the trans IN - at that time Marlin was not advertising rebuilt trannies). I get about 100K to 150K out of a w56 before 5th gear tosses... |
