that sounds better ... cause I didn't think the 9:1 comp ratio of the 3.0 was needing the premium. Except maybe for the guys that play with their ignition timing.

Interesting. I was not aware of the difference between RON and AKI. I modified my previous post for correctness.

But for you to call it the "correct" fuel is obviously not true. As stated, it was "designed" to run on octane grades ≥ 87.

So, your point is moot. Sorry.

Nobody said "need". Simply that 87 octane IS NOT REQUIRED!!!! And NO, you don't need to "play" with your ignition timing to see the benefits of running fuel that is > 87 octane!!!

TO ALL: If you want better performance out of your 3VZ-E DON'T RUN REGULAR 87 OCTANE FUEL!!!

Sorry if I caused any confusion to anyone, here's what I meant.

I only said "need" because before MacGyver cleared up the RON vs. AKI issue I was going by the page out of the manual that MudHippy posted. Suggesting 91 octane, which we all automatically think of as "premium", as the recommended fuel.

Therefore before we learned that 91 RON is approx. equal to our 87 The fsm page had led me to falsely believe that the 3vze was intended to run on 91.

So ya it doesn't "need" premium but better fuel can't hurt.

Also I didn't mean that someone needed to "play" with their timing to run, or see the benefits of higher octane fuels. What I meant was that the guys who already have adjusted their timing usually have to run higher octane fuels to reduce or prevent detonation.

Having just bought my toyota (after owning gmc for over 30 years), this is more helpful than you might realize. I've scoured many excellent links and FAQ's on this site, huge help and this is exactly what I was looking for, from someone who has experience with the 3.0. hmmm i did not know that the green coolant was bad for the 3VZE...guess im going to have to go to toyota for the red one. Just curiosity does anyone know how much it is for the gallon of antifreeze and if its premixed?

G.Damn! This is one hell of a posting regarding the 3-VZE. Everything seems to fireing on all cylinders. I wished I had known about this years ago.
I have a 91, 4x4, 5spd V6 with 324,000+ miles on it, and have been through all this, so kudos to you all!
PS, adjusting the valves ain't really that bad, I've done it several times, but it is a pain in the ass through!

I wish that someone in the know would place this "Epic 3V-ZE info" in the begining of this forum (86-95 Trucks) as a sticky so that all can see it. Because it's a bitch to find, I tried search using 3V-ZE, and counld not find it, or at least it was not in the top

I have a 94 4wd with a 3zve and an automatic transmission. I'm lucky to get 11 mpg driving 55mph on the highway. The engine was rebuilt completely just before I bought it so I'm sure something was not adjusted correctly. I have checked the timing and it is fine (10BTDC). I don't expect the automatic to do as well as a standard, but 11mpg is bad.

Any suggestions on where to start?

Just curious; did you actually READ this thread?

1. CHECK FOR CEL CODES!
2. Oxygen Sensor if not replaced in the last 80,000 miles.
3. Check for vacuum leaks.

If you want to actually get some help, you should start your own thread with an appropriately descriptive title.

1. No CEL Codes
2. Performed the two diagnostic tests on the O2 Sensor. The resistance was close to the range listed in the FSM, but a little out. The voltage spikes were well above 6 in 10 seconds.
3. Not sure how to check for vacuum leaks.

Hey guys, I know this post is old, but it has lots of good info. I'm going through my V6 now, and I needed new injector plugs as mine broke at the lock tabs on removal. I found some injector plug bodies at a site, but would have paid over $65 including shipping. Here is a much cheaper source if you're interested:
