weird timing issue

Went to check my timing the other eve . so i marked the notch, which was in the wrong place, jumpered the diag box, hooked up timing light and the notch is moving counterclockwise slowly like the timing is being retarded constantly or something. Goes all the way around and comes up on the other side and keeps moving. Could it be a bad plug or an engine knock issue? I also got a code 12 but it doesnt show each time i check it. I am a little worried so I did retard the timing for safety sake. help 91 4runner 3vze

Are you sure you have the light pickup on number 1 cylinder?

would bad crank pulley be a bearing? The thing is that it keeps a perfect rhythm on its way around. Rechecked to make sure I have the right wire and it is the #1 wire. Toyota wires. Thaks again

thanks rj. i talked to a mech today and he said that sounded right. Does the 3vze 91 have that harmonic balancer with the rubber ring? if it is he said it was a simple job.
