Weird Speedo Problem - Pegged.
My speedo in the 4runner is (and has been for months) doing something weird. It is going way fast, and at cruising speed (55ish - I guess?) it is pegged all the way around. No gear whine, and it is pretty consistent on the readings. The 'runner runs great other wise, well...since the head gasket that I had to replace last week (but that is another story). I would guess speedo cable or speed sensor, but it is so consistent with how it reads. I have not tried the cruise control, I will on my trip home from work.
I mean it is real nice saying that my 4runner can do 0-60 in under 3 seconds, and it can cruise comfortably (with traffic, mind you) at 120. But lets be realistic.
In my yotatech searches, I have seen many threads about the speedo gear whine and it not working or bouncing. I am getting none of that. But none about it going the "other way." If I missed it please direct me.
I just hope I don't get in the situation where I have to say "Actually, officer, I was doing 110!"
Thanks in advance for your help. Yotatech has been an invaluable tool in keeping me out a car payment for many years. You are a blessing!

Your speedo is electric, not mechanical, so you won't have cable flop. What you probably have is a speed sensor that is acting up.

In 1995, in the 4Runners and Trucks, they switched back to mechanical speedos for ONE year. 1995 only. The electrical speedo was 1992-1994 only. If ya don't believe me, take a look at your speed sender in the t-case
I would be looking at the speedo itself causing the problem. All the gear and cable know are "turn" and they either turn, or don't. The speedo itself is where the adjustment is.
