weird 22re problem....

well, my truck has a misfiring problem usually between 1500-2000 rpm. it's pretty intermittent, sometimes it'll do it for a week straight, other times it'll do it for a little bit then stop. once i get it up to speed it's fine. it's always alot worse after the engine warms up to temp, or putting gas in the tank (whether i fill it up or put in $5, $10, $20 etc). used to seem like it ran better with anything less than a 1/2 tank, but lately it's been acting up even with a 1/4 tank. i usually use 87 octane, but i've tried using 93, that didn't help, tried different stations.. shell, sunoco, bp, hess, etc. etc. none of that helped either. i've run fuel system cleaners and seafoam through it, didn't seem to help at all

sometimes the check engine light will come on for a few seconds, but for some reason the code(s) won't store.

i also notice that when my truck is acting up the brake light will stay on. is the brake light a kind of check engine light? if so how do i check the code(s)?

anyone have any idea what could be causing this? i'm about sick of this damn truck. i've replaced alot of parts in the last 6 months or so. the codes i used to get led me to replacing the distributor, ignition coil, tps, fuel pump, plugs/ factory wires, opening circuit relay....

it's like it comes in waves, it'll be good for a little while, then get bad, good, bad and good so on.

it's almost like i'm trapped in this truck. i can't sell it for any decent amount of money with a problem like this, and i can't afford to buy something else

please help?

start with the basics make sure the intake hoses are tight no vac lines leaking make sure the vac line to the power steering is not leaking that one had me stumped for a week or two.

disconnect the battery and see if it make a difference after the ecu has reset.

I have had the same gas refill thing happen with both trucks 22r and 3vze

only in the winter I think it might have been the egr valve the 3vze is throwing the EGR code the 22r was out of time a little. vac advance was leaking and it needed a valve adjustment.

have you ever adjusted your valves on your truck?

no i haven't adjusted the valves. i probly should, i've only had the truck about a year, and the guy previous owner didn't take that great of care of the truck, so who knows how longs it's been? i might have to do that this weekend if i get the chance. how involved is it? is it something i can do in a couple of hours?

The first time I adjusted the valves on a 22re I was 15, no prior vehicle experience other than a a starter and oil changes on the 22re I had. Took me about 45 minutes. I can do it in about 15 minutes now. Its super easy. You need a 10mm, 12mm and 19mm sockets, socket wrench, 12mm crescent wrench, a flat head screw driver and a feeler gauge with .008" and .012". To make things easier, have a spark plug socket to take out the plugs.

This is going to sound really retarded, but my 3.slow started acting up and i thought it was all of the above. (all great info by the way) Well long story short i ripped off the cat and found it plugged up. Sounds crazy but when that happened i had all your symptoms un plugged the cat with a long screw driver.... Runs great now. Otherwise i'd say vacuum
