Turn the truck on, and feel around the manifold/block and then feel by where the manifold connects to the exhaust pipe, and so on.
You should be able to feel the exhaust comming out.

If the gaskets are gone, tightening down the bolts will do nothing.

How bad is the leak?

you should be able to feel the exhaust from the leak.

you could use a peice of paper or somthing, go around the manifold and see if it moves.. or somthing similar.

I recently did some exhaust gaskets on a 90 silverado, you could feel where the exhaust was comming from easily.

get a long piece of vaccum hose (or other small diameter hose) and hold one end close to your ear. run the other end around the area of a suspected exhaust leak. You'll be able to hear where it is.

As far as burning a valve. Don't worry about that. If you ran at highway speed with no manifold on it, you might burn a valve. There is no chance of that happening while at idle.

Check your header pipe at the "Y" those things are VERY prone to cracking, especially if the support bracket that mounts to the transmission is MIA
