w56 transmission grinding Help!!!

W56 tranmission problems. started out in 5th and worked its way into all the other gears. repalced the gear oil when i frame swapped the truck a month ago, and drove it about 1k miles since. Took a look at the gear oil tonight and its really soupy and milky yellow. Took a video of it here. All help is extremely appreciated!

Wow that sounds awful! It's strange that in 4th it is still very noisy. Since 4th is a 1:1 ratio, I would expect it to be silent if it were a bearing problem. When mine went this year, 4th was my only gear that didn't have the noise.....so I drove in that as much as possible, until the syncros finally went out and I replaced it.

I'm no expert but have dealt with this recently and hope someone chimes in with more.

Is the noise there at all speeds? What happens when you let in the clutch? Did you replace the clutch?

The color and consistency of the fluid sounds like you have water mixed with the fluid.

I wasn't able to hear the video since my sound doesn't work right now, but if the trans is grinding into every gear, I would think something is keeping the clutch from disengaging completely, either a mechanical issue or hydraulic.

yeah, the noise is there when i clutch as well as when i coast in neutral. the noise is also there at all speed, the frequency slows as the speed slows, and it seems that the clack happens during every full rotation of the output shaft (or whatever of it that i can see when i pull the shifter). the clutch was done during the frame swap, as was the TOB, pilot bearing, fork, ball pivot, etc.

@ James Woods: would it operate as smoothly as it does currently (driving quality is not suffering) if the clutch was not depressed? Also, it started only in 5th gear and then slowly walked its way down into 4th, then 3rd, and now 2nd and 1st. I'm going to drain the fluid tomorrow. My dumb fault for using this transmission. It was out in the weather for a while (covered) but I figured it was okay so long as we drained all the fluid and replaced it with new stuff before it went it. Looks like im going to have to swap back to the other tranny.

Thank you both very much for the replies! Ya'll are an amazing help.

Oh well disregard my earlier comment then, if it is there at speed and in neutral, then its not anything clutch related, I would drop the trans and crack it open, the problem should be easy to spot.

Yeah I dont have time to do that just yet, so I'm going to try and get my old tranny swapped back in as fast as I can this weekend when I head home for easter. Then I'll crack the tranny as time allows if I can bring it back to school with me. Anyone had experience with good rebuilds? I'm a pretty capable mechanic, but never done a tranny. Worth sending somewhere or buy a reman kit?

Manual transmissions are pretty darn easy, don't let it intimidate you. Me and my brother in law just showed Vance164 how to do it on his transmission in a few hours. He had a problem with not being able to shift into 3rd gear, turned out to be the 3-4 shift fork had broke, $45 and he was all set to go.

I agree with James Woods. Not sure what it could be but be but if you crack the case it will be easy to spot. I'm right in the middle of a W56 rebuild and so far the hardest part is making the right puller to get the gears off. Fifth was the hardest I can't believe how well these gears are pressed on. Once you get it out of the intermediate plate it gets much easier if you have a press. Once it's out of the truck it will seriously take five minutes to crack the case and see what's inside. If everything looks good at first glance my best guess would be one of the needle bearings under the gears.
