I replaced the shifter seat bushing. I also changed the trans fluid, and poured it through the shifter hole to refil the trans.

I've put 4 quarts in, and i still cant feel any oil in what i believe is the fill plug. Does anyone know the capacity, or anything else that could be the issue?

From my Haynes Manual:

4 to 7 pnts (fill to over flow)

I think I put about 4L into mine the last time I filled. The filler plug is on the side of the tranny: drivers side, just a bit forward of the shifter.

its on the drivers side? I thought it was the 22mm plug on the passengers side. I'll check the smaller bolt on the drivers side and see if anything comes out.

I tried at the plug on the drivers side. wont move. Its a 17mm, and seems to be slightly behind the shifters. The 22mm plug i removed, and thought was the fill plug is actually directly between the trans, and t-case shifters on the passengers side.

Im guessing the trans is full with 4 quarts in it, but I still would like to check that its properly filled through the correct fill hole. Does anyone have a picture of the correct fill hole?

Fill hole on mine is right next to the reverse light switch.

the hole next to the reverse light switch is the one I tried thats a 17mm, but cant manage to get loose. I guess Ill go try it again thanks.

I'd invest in a FSM or a Haynes/Chilton for things such as this so you have it on hand.

On my 85 the tranny fill was on the d-side in an awkward spot, so that is why I filled it through the shifter until it came out the fill hole. Seems like it was between 3 and 4 quarts.

Got it now. It was the 17mm plug near the reverse light switched as described.

The issue was that I expected it to be a 22mm plug like the rest of the fill/drain plugs on the truck are. There is a 22mm plug on the passengers side, and I thought it was that, but that seemed rather high in the trans to be the fill hole. I dont like haynes and chilton because they tend to just generalize this stuff, and provide few details about how where to actually find things.

It was indeed between 3 and 4 quarts, and I hope that in the future someone who needs to know this can find this thread (I couldnt find any threads on the capacity of the w-56).
