Volvo electric fan install

well it seems from my search that some have done flex-a-lite fans on a second gen, but i could not find were someone had done a volvo fan on a second gen, so i figured what the hell. the install is complete, much more involved than putting it into a 3rd gen (compared to bamachem's writeup, great writeup btw) i replicated his work with the volvo fan from ebay=$38 shipped, and the delta current controller w/temp sensor. sorry, a friend has my digicam, so no pics, but ill get them this weekend as im pulling it back out for a modification. the 3rd gens aparrently 1. use a bigger radiator than 2nd gens 2. use a MUCH bigger fan shroud than 2nd gens. the only way to possibly get the volvo fan "nested" was to trim 3" from one side, 2" from the other side, almost completly remove the bottom, and trim the top, and then mount it upside down. man it was alot of cutting, my dremal has left for florida for the week

i also chose to mount the controller differently, its on the passenger side wall, behind RB#2(relay box#2, or for the electrically challenged, the fuse box in the engine bay behind the battery

i chose this location to keep my wire runs short and tidy, very close to the battery, and the locations i chose to pull for accessory wiring(switched 12v, and ac) the ac is interesting, and i guess its different from 3rd gens, but according to the factory electrical supplement manual, the cds fan(condensor fan) gets positive voltage all the time, and is switched on the ground side, however it is a 2 speed fan with 2 relays, so i decided to take my ac signal off the ac idle up vsv, more on that later as im still testing. so far so good, engine temps (from the gauge at least) are stable, but i plan on building a device to monitor the voltage output of the ect sensor, to know for sure. ill get pics i promise, i know alot of people want to see pics of the "nesting" and it is very different from the 3rd gen install in that regard. brad

finally got my camera back!! about damn time i know! here are the pics

as far as doing this, just follow the writeup in the tech section, then look how i cut the shroud for second gens. the ac idle up was no good, it also is switched to ground. i guess ill try the compressor clutch next, then after that i have no idea. i have a pic showing where i mounted the controller, but i need to edit the fender sticker vin# out!!

That's AWESOME that you got it to work and took pics of the back side of the shroud. If I ever take mine off, I'll take more detailed pics. I only had to trim the "tabs" off the volvo shroud to get it to fit in the 3rd gen shroud - so 3rds have not only a lager radiator, but also a deeper shroud.

What happen to the pics? This thread isn't that old to have pulled them from the host is it?

Looks great, all you do is cut the plastic and bolt it to the stock shoud, eh.... I think I may do that next spring when the motor is out for the rebuild.

i think the only thing that makes it tougher than a 3rd gen is the amount of shroud cutting, everything else is the same. heres a pic of the cut shroud pieces, should give an idea of how much you gotta cut. the main problem is the 2nd gen shroud is much shallower than a 3rd gen, which requires alot more plastic removal from the volvo fan shroud as to not hit the radiator.

Does the dcc controller hook up to the higher speed on the Taurus 2 speed fan? (I assume).

im not sure waskilly, im using a volvo fan. maybe someone else knows? if its a relay thing, i think you would get rid of the relays, as the dcc hooks up directly to the 2 leads for the motor.

Did you ever get this fan running right? or at all?

When you are talking about 3rd and 2nd gens in here, are you talking about 4runners? or trucks? Just curious (my truck is a '93, so 3rd gen depending on who you talk to)

Did you install this on your rig, and if so how did it work out? towing? in town? stop and go traffic? etc. etc. any details are appriciated

I've been looking to go with an electric fan for a while, and wasn't too keen on paying $$$ for a flexi-crap, or putting anything from a ford on my toyota (not that Volvo or whoever owns them now is any better)
