10mm & 12mm sockets, 12mm or 14mm wrench, a feeler gague (0.008in intake and 0.012in exhaust recalling from memory - been 10 years since I did my 22RE!) , and a flathead should do. You have to adjust a few, turn the crank, and do some more since not all valves will be at rest at the same time...

The hardest part is removing the valve cover - Seriously!

Oh boy - Bringing back 87 4Runner memories!

Good call about the engine being warm! Been close to 10 years since I did this on my 87, and my Tacoma has never required any adjustments until now. I must say I am dumbfounded at how reliable my stock 3.4L Tacoma is after coming from a hot-rodded 22RE 4-Runner :p Literally night and day (like a repair once every other month versus a few repairs in the life of the Tacoma!)

wrong, wrong and wrong.
start at TDC on compression stroke (this is where the #1 cyl valves are both loose)

here you would adjust the #1 intake and exhaust valves, #2 intake valve, and #3 exhaust valve.

now rotate crank 1 full turn back to TDC and adjust #2 exhaust, #3 intake and #4 intake and exhaust.

the crank will never get turned 1/2 of a turn nor will it get turned more than once. this is the only proper way to do it and is explained on page 20 of the FSM. http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/87-4Runne...4runner_88.pdf

The Haynes manual has it right recalling from memory (do one set of valves at "true" TDC and the other set at the next TDC). Man, my manual is DIRTY!!!

It's fairly easy to see which valves can be adjusted at which TDC (true TDC or the compression stroke for #1) by wiggling the rockers. If they are tight, then they aren't closed and won't be adjusted until you make another 360* turn

I think the 0.008 and 0.012 feeler gagues are the only two I ever used! You can certainly tell by looking at them

look up Raxed had it completely wrong. It might "work" I don't know, but how do you know for sure your exactly 1/2 turn anyway without a mark on the pulley like for TDC? you don't and you don't know if the base circle of the cam is at it's lowest spot. NO way in hell would i do it his way in any motor and I have done alot of valve adjustments in my vehicles. I always seem to get vehicles with solid tappets lol.
