Valve cover gasket leak.

So yeah, both of my valve cover gaskets need replacing bad. From what im told its like a $30 part but will take around $400 to install due to having to take the plenum off. Im thinking about spending a saturday doing it myself rather than paying someone else to do it (hey, why do you think I take these 2 hr. automotive classes at school?), but im afraid its a lot more easier said than done. Any suggestions?

I have to get it fixed pretty quick b/c my 4runner is bleeding in the driveway, and my parents dont like that very much and I really dont have hundreds of $$ just sitting around anywhere.

After a major tune-up this is really the only problem I have with my truck other than low compression due to a plug hole that needs re-chasing b/c whoever put the plugs in last striped one of the plug holes

It's really not a tough job. I've done it several times. This is a good opportunity for you to become more familiar with your engine. A few things to consider: There is a proper tightening sequence for the valve cover bolts. I've found it extremely helpful to put a bead of RTV on the valve cover gasket to help ensure a solid seal. I've had problems with the aluminum threads in the head stripping out before reaching torque spec. You can use longer bolts in some of the holes on the head if you have stripping problems.

Don't be intimidated by the plenum. You do not have to remove all of those vacuum lines. Unbolt the EGR and disconnect the cold start injector. Then just flip the plenum up on it's side. Do the PCV mod while you are at it.

Chicken Lover is right, its not too difficult.

I have done the work twice so far. I would get some masking tape, felt tip marker, and a sheet of notebook paper.

Then as you remove each vacuum hose, tape both ends and assign them a number. Mark this number on both tape strips so you'll know where it goes. I would also go in a chronological order and write them onto a sheet of paper. That way you'll know if you missed one when its time to reconnect them. I would go further and number the wired disconnects too.

Believe me doing this will save you some headaches when trying to figure out which hose you forgot to reconnect.

And make sure you replace that PCV on the passenger side valve cover.

Make sure you torque the valve pans down to the correct torque....if not you will develop leaks again! I went through this before....make sure you get new throttle body gasket and plenum gasket.

Can you take the Drivers side valve cover off without removing the plenum?

Yes. You might have to remove the t-body though... Can't remember.
