Vacuum lines, EGR, can I remove this valve?

So recently I got about 15.3 mpg, so I did a tune up rotor, cap, plugs, wires, o2 sensor, Cleaned the K&N filter, plus I drove it very VERY cautiously (I tried to not use the brakes and kept it under 2300 rpms) and my mpg jumped all the way to 16.7 WOW that sucked so I did somemore digging on YT to see if there I could do. So I checked to see if I had a exhaust leak before the o2... nope. SO I checked the vacuum lines from the EGR valve and found there was a schrader valve in the line...WTF why would you do that??? So I took it out, wait should I do that? I dont even know?

schrader valve on the egr line? I poked around my 88 22re and the only valves like that are on the a/c system... and my 91 22re doesn't have one at all anywhere near the engine.

and 16-17 mpg isn't all that bad considering stock gears and 31's. I've pulled 23 out of mine (88 22re 31's) once but average is around 20. The 91 22re / automatic gets around 18-20 on flat ground (even in stop-and-go city driving) if you stay out of the throttle and keep it at or below 70.

are you talking about this?

that's the only valve-like thing that I know about, but this is on a 3rd gen 22re as well... it's just a one-way valve...

yeah and I don't think I'd complain about those numbers I get about the same on a good day

no a previous owner I assume tried to block off the egr with a schrader valve he/she put it in the line that goes into or out of the top of the egr, I just replaced most of the vacuum lines. then set the idle speed and timed it to 5 degrees?? Is that what it should be at?

10* or if you feel the need you can advance it a bit to 12* or so.

A schrader valve is like the valve stem on a tire or the fitting to allow check / charge on the a/c system. Some vehicles have a similar valve to allow connection of a fuel pressure gauge for testing purposes, but our 'yotas do not have that.

22RE baseline timing should be 5btdc. The ECU will adjust from there once the diagnostics jumper is removed.
22R baseline timing varies depending on year, etc. but is usually between 5-10 BTDC with the vacuum advance/retard diaphragm(s) disconnected and the hose(s) to the intake plugged.

Stock timing for a 3.0 is 10*btdc with the link jumped. That's what the sticker under my hood says.

I thought we were talking about a 3.0
