V6 Caliper Conversion Questions

Hi guys - I've done quite a bit of research on this and consolidated my remaining questions I still need answered.

For those of you who have done this swap, I'd love to hear from you on some of my open items below.

I have a pair of SW13B calipers that I scored from gottadog here when I sold him some old transmission stuff cheap. I run 32" tires on my 87 runner with 4" lift, and will likely do 32" or 33" next set. I still run 4.10 gears and will address that later, but for now, I'd like to address the need to STOP my vehicle faster

I read Corax's write up here, and some others on YT, and I'm trying to understand all the parts I'll need.

Here is where I am with the parts I think I need:

1) Pair of SW13B calipers (in hand!)
2) Set of T100 brake pads (any 4x4 from 96-98) - still need
3) Set of T100 brake roters (and 4x4 from 96-98) - still need
4) 1.0" Master Cylinder Bore or 1 1/16" Master Cylinder Bore? - still need
5) Double Diaphragm booster - or not??? - still need

Reason I'm asking about the booster is that Corax said in his writeup that he didn't have room for it, yet I feel like I've seen in many threads that this is what you're supposed to add it - you would need it to correspond to the larger bore MC (?).

Also, I wasn't able to discern from his writeup about the difference/benefit of the 1" versus the 1 1/16" MCs?

Would one use:
- 1 1/16" with double diaphragm
- 1" with stock single diaphragm
- Other??

For those who found MC's on eBay, did you just search for T100 compatible ones? I found this example when searching for 1998 T100.... Did you need to buy a plug adapter or does the 1st gen 4runner brake fluid sensor plug swap into it?

Did any of you guys get a rotor/bad combo deal like this one on eBay?

Did you get a simple tool for bending brake lines around the new MC like this one at Summit?

Other than that, are all the parts plug and play (caliper bolts, brake lines, etc?)

Would you recommend breaking the brake line connections with vise grips first, and THEN undoing with a flare end wrench? I've had bad luck with flare end wrenches and brake/clutch lines in the past....

Thanks and sorry for all the questions - I just want to do this once and do it right....I may do the LSPV elimination later, but don't have the hardware for flaring/bending, nor the confidence right now.

Everything I got just bolted on. Dual diaghram booster, V6 calipers, 1" bore master, FJ60 rotors. ONLY thing I tweaked was a brake line at the master, to help it line up a bit better. But I didn't have to bend any new lines. I believe it depends on years and models. I have 33s & 4.10s and I can lock up all 4corners if I wanted. Almost stops as well as the wife's FJC...

Can I ask why you're doing all the T100 stuff? That's the first I have seen mention of that model to use for the brake upgrade. I'm sure it's very close or all the same, I was just wondering.

Can't see the white font on the white background on my phone...I used the standard v6 calipers etc like rokblok.
I still need to add my 87 Turbo dual diaphragm booster.

Will the t100 stuff clear your existing wheels? Haven't really researched it that much.
I am considering going the taco kit from FROR so I can pull a front inner axle without pulling a knuckle...

Reading through corax's writeup, it seems the T100 calipers are the same as those used with trucks and 4runners using the v6 calipers stock from the factory. On the ebay links you'll see that the models for the parts overlap.

Should clear...may need to trim dust shield but not worried.

For this thread I'm mostly trying to understand what mc/booster setup I need. Rokblok says 1" and dual diaphragm...is that best? Can you do this with the stock 15/16" 4 cyl diaphragm?

Also if anyone has recommendations on cleaning/painting calipers, have at it! I've used krud cutter, wire brushes and wire wheel on a drill...still pretty dirty.

You'll need wheel spacers to clear V6 brakes if you have a SFA. Mine are 1.5" as shown in pic

I used fj60 vented rotors (any year fj60 works), a 1" mc from a 94 v6 4runner, and my calipers and pads are also from a 94 v6 4runner.
I tried to squeeze in the 94 v6 4runner dual diaphragm booster on mine, but it hit and rubbed my steering column since it was too fat and thick. My solution to this was to get one off of a 2wd v6 pickup which was also dual diaphragm but just a tad skinnier so it didn't rub my steering column. and yes you'll have to bend the hard lines just a little.

For cleaning I just used purple power and a brush. 3 coats of primer and 3 coats of red engine paint.

Thanks Vang.

So, I'm looking at Boosters on eBay and seeing those that fit both a 94 4runner and pickup (seems from your story that the 94 pickup has the room for the larger 4runner booster, but my 1st gen 4runner, like yours, won't...so I should only find a donor pickup part, and not one from a same-year 4runner).

Do all the early 90s V6 pickups (4x4 and 4x2) come with both the dual diaphgram AND the 1" MC?

I found this one from a 1990 pickup with the V6:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/90-91-92-93-...329d00&vxp=mtr

And this one from a 92 pickup (looks like the MC is there too - did they come with the 1" MC? Maybe I can score a package deal....):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/90-91-92-93-...329d00&vxp=mtr

And this one from a 93 pickup:

i found 95 4runner v6 calipers and rotors that had 1 set of pads run through.
iirc it was about 40-50 bucks at pic a part.

i had already done the rear trail gear rear disc kit with a 1" mc and it works great.
nice to have strong brakes. still using the stock booster.

still have to install my willwood proportioning valve/remove lspv.

I'm running a MC from I think a 92, booster from a 91 and calipers from a 91. I had to cut my dust shields to get the calipers to fit but everything else was straight bolt on. fresh pads, bleed the system and go. did the whole thing for under $100 and I'm extremely happy with the stopping power I have now.

Thanks DiretyOregonKid - were all those parts from a 4unner or pickup? I'm thinking of Vang's feedback above where his 4runner booster he got was too large so he got one from a pickup of the same year instead.

Is your MC 1"?

Did you get larger rotors are are you using your smaller old ones and living with the gap between the pads/rotors?

Calipers, pads, rotors, MC and double diaphragm booster all from the same Toyota.
Use an 88 4Runner 3.0 if you got IFS.
Use FJ60 rotors if you got SFA and wheel spacers to clear calipers.

You guys are making this way too hard.

Everything I got was from runners. Also, I guess I missed the part where this was a solid axle thread. see wabbit's post above and call it a day..

OK, so now I feel I'm back to square 1 here. I was researching 88 4Runner brake systems (so I could, like Wabbit suggested, hunt for all the components from a V6 88 4Runner and make it simple)....BUT the calipers I have are from a later year 4runner (SW13B).

The 88 4Runner with V6 had the SW12B calipers (I think the caliper pistons were smaller or staggered in size, when compared with the SW13B calipers I have from a 95 4Runner (Pretty sure they are from that truck and year).

So, following Corax's write up, I have T100/954Runner calipers (SW13B), and would need the T100 rotors so the calipers/pads fit, but I'm still at a loss for MC and Booster set up. The 2nd gen 4Runner dual diaphragm booster is too large (hits steering column).

I did mine and my buddy's without clearance issues. I just went out and looked at mine again and it would looks like I still have an inch and a half before I hit the column. Can I get a picture of your engine bay in that corner, just out of curiosity.

OK, here are some snaps I took today of my current setup.

Looks like 13/16" MC on the rusted casting

I can fit between 1 and 2 fingers in between the bottom of the booster and the steering column.
