is the only difference the bell housing/torque converter?

The face plates of the transmission is different, and so is the bolt pattern on the bell housing.
Not sure about the Torque converter. But I belive that the V6(and later 22RE's) did use a bigger 9 1/2" clutch vs the older 8 7/8" disc. Are you looking to replace your tranny, or is this a fact finding trip?

i am replacing my tranny in my 1990 toyota 4runner (v6 automatic) and i have access to a 4cyl automatic and wondering if i can use it or not

I have a V6 tranny + t-case for sale(A340F) if you're interested. I know I'm no where close, but if your interested I'll try to get you a truck shipping estimate if you send me your zip code.

4cyl are gear driven
6cyl are chain driven the miracle tranny to get is a 4cyl turbo tranny. but there are as about as rare as hens teeth. the 4cyl can be adapted to a V6 with an (expensive) adapter plate from Marlin.
