v-6 lockright in factory 4:88

got a factory 488 8" with a used lock right. ive read in a few spots the lockright has 8 springs looks like 4 are smaller then the other 4. when i installed it im pretty sure theyre was only 4. and its not quite working right. all the right ups dont show putting in 8 springs just says install pin and springs.

Input anyone?

from the looks of it it has 4 springs bigger ones and 4 smaller ones that go inside of the bigger ones, so a total of 4 set ups but total of 8 spring to make it up.... thats what im reading.

i definitly dont have that.. i wonder if that would mess everything up.. everything seems fine at low speeds but once you give it gas its doesnt want to grip and it just slips. the locker was a little worn but it seems like it would work. it sucks i gotta take the oil out re seal it and pull the axles just to find out!

If you need all of the springs, no big deal, this should be the right thing to get.

what are the little springs for ? going inside the big ones? would thins make the locker unengage under load if they werent in?

this would be just a guess but the spring inside the other I suppose provides a progressive spring rate. The higher the spring rate the more it would want to stay locked. So I would say yes it will cause the locker to go "soft"

and if it was "soft" it wouldnt want to engage making a clunking sound and giving no power to either wheel?

Lockrights, in my experience, are notorious for rounding the corners of the teeth and disengaging very easily. When you pull it out, verify that all the edges of the teeth on all four pieces are in good shape. Even a little rounding can affect a Lockright.

they were a little rounded when i got it (it was used) im thinkning the biggest problem would be the springs. probably better off putting the spider gears back it and getting something else

if you've got it why not use it? you'll be fine, just get the rebuild kit pictured - it's not uncommon for the springs to fail, hence the rebuild kit. IIRC, mine definitely took 4 pairs of springs, the smaller ones inside the larger ones just like the directions say. aside from the 4.88s themselves, the lockrite was probably one of the best mods i've done for traction and helps get me where I wanna go (or FURTHER into sticky situations )

I have to research it a bit to be sure, but I want to say there are ways to tighten a lockrite up too. By the way of using stronger springs. But I could be wrong and it might be a limited slip I am thinking about. Just thought I would throw that out there.
