undecided - standard or automatic trans
i have a 93 pickup with automatic trans and auto-hubs. got the truck with a siezed 3.0 engine so i have never drove it. the truck appears to be all stock.
i am currently driveing a 90 pickup 3.0L 5spd with lockout hubs. my future plan is to pull the engine out of the 90 and drop into the 93. witch i am torn to do that also since i like the 90 but it has been neglected and beat up thru the years by prevouse owners.
my question is how is the automatic transmission's in these trucks ?. i have allways owned a stick shift truck as my daily driver. and love the control you have with a manual trans. yes it does get old sometimes shifting and being stuck in traffic. i know the 3.0 is under power and afraid it may be a real dog with a auto-trans.
if i decide i dont ike the auto trans is it a big job to swap in a manual trans clutch setup ?.

I have a 91 with a 22 re and auto tranny , to be honest it's not that bad . My buddy has the same truck with a stick and it is a little quicker from a stop but not much. I like to enjoy a cup of joe on the way to work so I love my auto. 160k miles on mine and no problems but my truck was dealer serviced its whole life before I got it. Has to be even better with a 6 cyln

I've had both, and I would say definately the 5spd. My auto was that much slower and had to be rebuilt at 179,000 miles, while the 5spd has 250,000 on the factory clutch!! It might just be me but manual transmissions have been more reliable to me than the slushbox.

I just bought an 86 pickup with the 22re and it was completely gutless I drove it for a few weeks now I'm completely rebuilding it and putting a 5 speed in. IMHO the Toyota auto is a peice of junk. The small engines don't have enough power to push the heavy tourque converter

Ya I would throw the 5speed engine and trans in the 93 and call it good. Like I was saying above the 3.0 engines are not interchangeable between 5 speed and auto's. So that auto trans in the 93 is no good to you. Sell it
I may have spoke to soon:
Well actually you can get an 8 bolt flywheel, but i think its a custom deally bob. Been looking for this info for a while, It appears to be expensive.
Id still stick with the 5speed

Honestly, the A340-series autos are identical to the Jeep AW4s. Do a search on Pirate to see how well regarded those are. Anyone who says the A340 is junk is misinformed.

Hold on, I might not know what I'm talking about, there might be more to this than I thought.
My 89 3VZ had a 5speed with a 6bolt flywheel. And my 95 3VZ had an auto with an 8 bolt flex.
Not sure if it year related or trans yet.

autozone shows the 8 bolt flywheel for both standard and auto trans in the 1989 and 1993 trucks.

I am sure they are all the same. seller wants me to come out soon and hear the engine run before he pulls it.

Its looking like you can get everything but a 6bolt flex plate. Ive only found them in 8 bolt i mean. So Im thinking all autos had 8bolt crank. And Manuals had 6 or 8. But still don't know why???

Be careful.. The auto 3.0s are notorious for the head gasket problem
All 3VZ's are notorious for head gasket problems. Not just autos. It doesn't matter if you have no transmission. And being careful doesn't have anything to do with it either.

ya figured all of them had head problems, i have herd that over the years and have seen more of the 4runners with bad engines.
the engine was replaced in my 90 truck before i got it. i know the guy that replaced it for the prevouse owner, but he passed away before i bought the truck. prevouse owner left for the navy and i got the truck from his brother. it had been sitting for awhile before i bought it. needed alot of maintenace and the front axle/diff put back in. replacement engine must have been from a 2-wheeler because it had the wrong oil pan. thats why diff was left out.
anyways the engine had 1989 spark plug wires on it. so i am assuming they were original wires and the engine is a 89. one will never know, but the engine sounds & runs great. so i am hopeing for low miles on it. truck shows 190,000 neglected miles on the speedo. overall i have about $1000 in the 90 and it has been a darn good truck the past 3 years. bought the 93 with siezed engine for $500 . i would say i am not doing too bad. and the guy wants $300 for the running engine with 180,000 miles from the 89 i am going to look at.

Ya there good engines IMO. My 89 is 260,000K and still running. I like mine, and have no intention of tearing it out, unless it blows . I did just knock on wood.
They are worth rebuilding, but for a little more most go with 5vz-FE swap.
