2. why do i smell my clutch burning when i go up a hill in 3rd gear?

1. allows you to start your truck without pushing in the clutch. just make sure she is in neutral or else you will go surging through your garage.

A little thread hi-jack here, sorry;

my clutch-start cancel went out, so now I have to put it in neutral, barely turn the key forward, then back the key off the starter to keep the ignition from firing.

Any suggestions as to how to fix the problem other than disconnecting the clutch-start cancel?

my clutch switch went out so I never have to press the clutch in, but I do anyways
I would like to replace it though, anyone got a part # ?

the smell of burning clutch means:
1. your clutch disc is done so its slipping
2. (what happend to my old one) The springs on the plate have gone causing your clutch to slip

Either way, replace your clutch.

just a note..my 1st gen truck ALWAYS made a smell when going up hills. many others have commented about this smell..nobody really knows what it is.

I don't know if it's normal, but my clutch will slip a little and smell burnt when I'm reving high uphill, only when I'm fairly low on clutch fluid. I have a small leak that I haven't been able to find, so if I forget to top up I notice my clutch doing similar things.

You could have no clutch fluid and you clutch shouldn't slip at all.
The fluid is used to release the clutch from the driveline. No clutch fluid = can't shift.
If the clutch is slipping at all when the peddle is all the way out, it's a good indication that it's on it's last legs.

If your thinking your clutch is shot this is how my mechanic told me to test mine.
Go like 45, put the clutch in and rev to like 4,000RPM, with ur foot still on the gas dump the clutch. if the rpms immediatly drop the clutch is decent, if they don't its ▓▓▓▓.

Also if you stall on a steep hill, and you're in 4LO, put both feet on the floor hit the clutch cancel button and turn the key. This saves you from rocketing down hill or losing traction when starting up hill again.

Maybe you can adjust it out a bit, or in. I did that with my '94 3.0 and it seems just fine. that was just the break in peroid for a centerforce though.
