Turn signals and hazard lights.

So, anybody know where the hazard light circuit is different from the turn signals on a 1986 Runner?

I lost both a little bit ago, at the same time. I figured it was the nasty splices in my column harness, because I got the turn signals back after resplicing. I never got my hazards back though. So I got a new set of bunny ears with intact wiring and swapped them in. I've still got turn signals, and still no hazards.

When the hazard switch on the column is "on", the turn signals don't work. I'm assuming that is some sort of intended interrupt, and that it indicates the switch itself is good. But after that, I'm kinda lost, because in my world the hazards and turn signals should share a circuit down to the flasher, and hence to the signal lamps. But obviously they don't. If anyone is familiar with this wiring, I sure could use some pointers.

Could you get a multimeter and check the continuity between both sides of the hazard switch and ground when it is in both positions? It sounds like something is shorting out to ground here, check the insulation of all the wires to make sure it's not deteriorated.

I have a multimeter, but I don't have any way of knowing exactly what wires are which. And the trouble stayed after I swapped in a set of bunny ears that were confirmed good in another truck. I'm near 100% positive the trouble is not with the column wiring.

I did, I frogged it with a known good from another truck.

I would also check the flasher.

I think we simulposted. And if the flasher was defective, wouldn't that affect the turn signals as well?

Or are there different flashers? Different fuses, maybe? That's kinda what I'm getting at, what parts of the hazards circuit are not also used by the turn signals, apart from the switches on the column?

I am not sure about the '86 model but on the later models, the Hazard lights are on a different fuse than the turn signals. Check the "HAZ-HORN" fuse which is located in the engine compartment in the later models.

Does your horn work?

The hazards and turn signals share the same flasher, but use different fuses. If your HAZ-HORN fuse is ok, I would suspect the wiring.
