Turbo

so, ive noticed, as im sure many of you have, that a 4cyl with 4:10 gears is not exactly a joy to drive on the highway. I mean it has no "balls", it is slow up hills, and for the low power, it sucks down the gas. I love the 22re engine. it is reliable and it goes really good for a 4cyl. But i want more power. I dont want to do a swap, and my buddy is selling a turbo, so my real question is would it be a good idea, or even feasible to put an IHI VF10 Turbo on a 22re. i understand i would have to add some things but what do u guys think?

honestly, it sounds like a cool idea and it will yield more horse, but is it worth it is the question? I'd say no. I have the V6, yeah its better about getting up hills. its even better now that I changed the manifolds out to headers, maybe you can try simple mods to gain some extra horsepower. changing out the gears is always an option too. 33s and 4.88s you'd get up those hills

I also just noticed you're a 22re with an automatic... heh 5 speed swap would do you a TON of good.

5speed the auto's steal so much power and fuel millage. mak is right lol doing a 5speed swap consists of a 5spd ecu and wiring harness, other then that its not that hard. without a question at all i would say that is the biggest thng you can do because it gives you the option to drop a gear on a hill. example i hit a hill on the hwy in 5th and i drop to 4th and it will atleast hold my speed up the hill. im thinking that if you find yourself able to do a turbo then you can do a 5spd swap . on the other hand, a turbo setup would leave you at about the same if not a tad faster then a stock 22re 5spd. i know that one guy on here has a factory turbo automatic 4runner and he has 37" tires and it gets around so it is possible. i would seriously look into a 5spd swap

You are willing to add a turbo but not swap in a 5speed? I think you need to do some research on turbo setups and what they else you would need to do. Should just find (good luck) a already turboed 22re and swap that in.

exactly^^^. low hp engines and old automatics are power hogs and the best thing you can do is to get a 5spd. then think about a turbo. unless you are completely against standard trannys and in that case i would say swap in a bigger v6-3.4 but that is also alot of work so you are kinda stuck. i dont see the point in running a whole turbo setup then blowing the added hp out the tailpipe with the auto tranny? lol my honest oppinion is 5spd then think about turbo

the auto is definitely the issue. the reason you have bad mpg is due to the 4.30 gears not 4.10. the 4.30 gears came with the auto. the five speed swap will be a major cure.

for example at 1000 ft. elevation on a 6% up hill, when my truck was stock plus new LCE header. i could go up that thing at 70mph in fifth. now with my mods i can pull up it between 60 and 65 mph.

my v6 5speed came with 4.30 gears. He dosent have 4.30 tho, he said he had 4.10s.

I really think finding a set of 4.56s will solve your woes. They came in v6 4runners with a auto. Time to start scouring your local junk yards.
