I recently checked out a little 1994 Toyota truck. I bought a 1988 about three months ago and it is now burning and leaking oil at a pretty quick rate. I decided to check around some just to see what else was out there and found a fellow asking 2800 for the 94 with 5,000 on a fully rebuilt 22re. Truck body looks rough because its a truck but motor looks clean as could be. The only other problem was the tranny was a little tricky to shift around at first. It had an angled shifter where as mine is just a straight up and down shifter so I figured I just wasn't used to the gear locations until I tried reverse. It had a difficult time engaging and would seem to pull forwards like it was in first gear or something but sometimes when I would give it gas and hold pressure on reverse it would slide right in. I guess my real questions is A: Could it be about to have a tranny problem and B: he offered to knock 1700 off the price if I traded mine so I could get out around 1100 cash with the truck with the brand new motor. Would it be worth it!

Doesn't sound unreasonable, but a few more things to check out...
1) who did the rebuild? Do they have a good reputation?
2) How many miles on the truck itself? In other words, what else is likely to be wearing out?
3) You say the body is in somewhat "rough shape". What does that mean? Any rust problems? Does it look like it's been abused or treated carelessly?

The 94 seems to be in better shape all around however the tranny was a little weird and I don't have much experience in the Toyota tranny world. Mine could get a new motor with the 1100 I would spend but everything else on mine has 240000 miles and master cylinder for clutch leaks and power steering pump is going bad. Also a little rusty on doors and of course all along the be where the fenders are. The other truck has about 210000 miles with an undercoated bottom and everything else seemed rust free when I looked at it. Motor work done by a friend of the guy for 1500. They all work on trucks. Heres some picks. Of course mine is the older one.

I would figure the tranny is gonna need some work. assume the worst. Dropping the tranny isn't an easy job. My 93 has no issues going in gear even reverse is easy to change into. Don't assume it's just that your not used to the tranny. So if the tranny craps out soon is that something you want to get into right off???

There is a reason he's willing to trade you taking $1,700 for your truck, for the diff the guy can have your truck and money to rebuild your motor. Think about it!!! He's not doing you any favors. You know what your truck needs. You get this one with a tranny that's about ready to crap out!!!

For the shifting problem could just be the plastic shifter seat on top of the tranny
( at base of shifter ) ?

Define just what rebuilt engine means??

It can mean quite a different thing to different people.

Is there proof of what work was done that can be verified !

I can wash the engine with the pressure washer and say it is a rebuilt engine

if it was me i would fix yours you then know just what you have.
