Truck Wont Start On First Try

When I try to start my 86 truck (22RE) after it has been sitting for a few days it starts then dies before it even reaches idle. It does this 3 or 4 times then fires right up and goes all day. Once it has been started I can shut it off and it will start back up but if it sits over night it takes 3 or 4 trys to get it going again. The motor is original and has over 200,000 miles on it and I had to replace o2 sensor and afm when it was smogged. Also it was sitting for 3 years without being started before I got it. What can be causing this to happen?

sounds like a smart plan, throwing parts at a problem is rarely the way to fix it...but a decent tune up, I dont consider throwing parts at a problem, cuase your engine can use it anyway. Go from there.

thats probably not it. Mine does the same thing and my maintenece is kept up well. My fuel pressure is fine as well. I think it's just something they do sometimes. I can't figure anything else.

Brand new starter, good plugs, wires, dist. ignition, and good fuel delievery. I dunno.

Try applying voltage + and - (gnd) to the cold start injector, if it clicks then it works. Also check for power at the connector when the engine is being cranked over. Clean the Cold Start Injector (CSI) and also try replacing the cold start sensor/switch which is way too expensive but might also be the problem and worth replacing. I've heard that usually it is the sensor. Injectors rarely go bad but I've seen temp. sensors go bad a lot.

Check out these links.

Try adding a good quality injector cleaner they may be leaking down and reducing the pressure in the fuel rail. Before you try to start the truck in the morning, or whenever the problem is expected to happen check the fuel manifold pressure. If there is no pressure look for why the pressure is leaking down.

Does the motor go into a fast idle when first started, I.E. 1200-2000 RPMs? It almost sounds like you air valve is malfunctioning. The air valve raises the RPM's when the motors is cold and gradually lowers the RPM’s as the truck warms up.
