truck starting problem

i have read thru a lot of posts and i am all over the place with my problem. i was driving the other day thru some mud and water. when i got out and driving down the road i had some sputtering. all seemed cleared up later that day. Sunday i was driving and the truck just cut off. now it will crank, but not start. i originally thought it to be the coil. i was not getting a spark. i replaced the coil, but same thing. if i take the the wire off the distributor coming from the coil, should i get a spark. thanks for any info

Check for loose battery cables or bad ground cables.

How deep was the mud and water you drove through?

i checked all the grounds. they all seem good. the mud and water was only about a foot deep. nothing too bad. the truck was not submerged or anything. i have 31 inch tires and the mud and water was not to the bottom of the doors.

In that case, we can safely say that it was a puddle

Are you sure that your getting spark? What about fuel?

if the coil wire is pulled off, it won't spark. Does it have any spark when eveything is hooked up?

Did any water splash up into the airbox? A lot of times when my air filter gets wet, it wont start until it dries out. But its weird that its happening days later. If the airbox did get wet, i would check into the mass air flow.

If there is no spark at ANY of the plugs i would check the distributor and rotor bug for corrosion and cracking wear. Make sure the bug spins. Finally, check all of the wires.

Can you be a little more descript about the flashes?

Also helps knowing what year / engine your truck is.

check engine flashes that's a dial-er giving a error code "used" for diagnosing ur truck most systems use the number 12 for the code to say "checking system" some flash 12 3 times be fore giving actual code when it flash one then 2 real fast and pauses that mean 12 if it count quick flashes that is a digit say flash's 7 times real fast that's the digit 7 then pauses then flash 2 times the code would be 72 oh and some times they use the number 12 to say done checking or it will repeat same codes

Yep, year/engine would help.
There are numerous posts on how to read the MIL/CEL.

If you have a code 12 [1 flash followed by 2 flashes] that means your ECU isn't getting an RPM signal from the distributor. This will cause no spark.
If that's the case, most likely your air gap inside the dist is bad, the pickup coils are bad or you have a wiring problem.

FYI, an easier way to check for spark is to remove the coil to dist wire at the dist, and ground it when checking for spark instead of checking at the wires. If you have spark there you know the problem is after that. If you don't, you don't waste time messing with your plugs, wires, cap, ect.

i went back out and checked. 12 is the only code i am getting. the only wire problem i have found is the oxygen sensor wires were damaged. 2 of the 4 wires were burned by the exhaust. i have repaired those, but still the same problem. could the oxygen sensor be shorted out and killing the system.

i was having a simalar problem but only when it was raining my truck would run good then just start to sputter ten run fine for about a mile or so then spputter agan and shut off. it would crank but no start i had spark and fuel pump relay and regulater was kicking on so i thought it was the fuel pump so i replaced the fuel pump and filter about 100 miles later it wqas raining and did it again i pulled up the code and it was code 14 witch is ignition so i replaced the igniter still had the same problem when wet out. then one day i wqas cleaning out my truck and my passenger side floor was soaked and realized i had a rust hole under the fender right by the computer so i patched that hole and after 1000 miles and alot of rainy day it hasnt happened to me again.

My 88 does the same thing but would start up again after it dried out, I never solved it but I'm thinking it could have been water or moisture in the distributor. I'd like to hear what your problem is if you get it figured out, hope you do soon.
