Trouble setting idle. AAV problems?

I just swapped in a new 22re on my 87 4runner. I am having trouble setting the idle. Cold idle is about 500-600, once it warms up, it will idle at 1000-1100. I've found a medium to set it at so it doesn't stall out when cold, and doesn't rev way too high when warm. Now, my understanding of the AAV is that the little coolant hoses run through when it's cold and it closes when warm and it adjusts the idle?. Could the AAV not be functioning at all? Has two coolant lines on it, and two air hoses on it IIRC

I tested cold start injector on first start up, new vacuum lines everywhere with no leaks ETC.
thanks

I have a 87 4Runner with the AAV disconnected it idles just fine.Been like that for a few years now.

as the coolant temp increases the AAV shuts off the extra air to the engine truth be told most of these unless replaced don`t work anymore.

you might have a vacuum hose on wrong or one leaking

Only the newer engines have the IACV****

That looks very similar, mine has two coolant lines on the left I believe, then two air hoses, one front, one back. Back goes up to intake manifold near the cold start injector and stuff, front goes up to near the throttle body, maybe before the throttle plate itself, can't remember. I thought it functioned like an IAC valve, but more old school. The master tech at my work called it an aux air valve...so i went with it

It has been a while but if I remember the valve is bimetal and with age just gets brittle and breaks .

I know i should have an old one here to take apart to satisfy my own curiosity
