Hey guys,

Im totally stumped.... Today I was driving down the highway going 67 on cruise, I saw a po po, then knocked it down a mph and then one i passed it i knocked it back up a mph then the truck jolted... And magicly appeard my check engine light.

The truck never shut off, or anything. It itles ok still.. But what was wierd, the check engine light went out and kept on going off and on. Until now its stuck on. The codes ive got are :

14= Ignition signal
22= Water Temp Sensor Signal

The truck starts up and doesnt have any issues. I just dont want to screw anything up. But i tryed to reset the codes and i cant get them to go off. I removed the EFI fuse for 30secs, didnt change anything. So i removed the negative battery terminal and still no change its still on when i start it up.

Its for a 1994 Toyota 4Runner. Any help would be appreciated!

I would go to AutoZone and have them pull the codes and see if they can reset it - if not maybe have Toyota see if they can reset it for you.
If you don't have the hook-up at your dealer they may try and charge you for it though.

How long did you leave the negative battery terminal disconnected?
Was it on as soon as you turned the key or did it take a few seconds for it to appear again?

Can autozone even pull obd1 codes?

I had it disconnected for probably 1hr. It was on as soon as i turned the key.

They reset mine when I had my 2nd gen...hadn't really thought about it though honestly...

Ill see if they can, but i dont think they have those scanners anymore. Ill probably end up taking it to my mechanic and see if he can do it.

But im just still trying to figure out why it jolted and then the codes came on??

Any ideas?

What's odd is that it jolted and then gave those two codes, neither of those having a glitch should cause an interrupt in power...very odd.

Could the timing belt jumped at all.? Since it jolted?

Or could the ecu be screwed up"?

Anything is possible but I would imagine you would have more symptoms than a CEL and a single jolt while driving.
Have you let it idle while listening with the hood up? Maybe poke around and see if you can feel any vibrations that are out of place?

Had the exact same codes

Temp sensor has failed at the back of the engine... this will not cause the engine to missfire or idle incorrectly. The stumble has come from the coil. Check that there is no water in the coil connection or the connections next to it. If there isnt replace the coil.

Ok thanks alot, ill try to pick up a new coil tomorrow.

Now were is this temp sensor located?

back of the engine on the drivers side. Look under the hoses for the heater and you will see two sensors.... its the one closest to the firewall. think it takes a 19mm socket from memory... you will need an extension and learn from me a cold engine... mine was giving me troubles while travelling and had to do it in a hotel parking lot in work dress clothes what fun that was and i guess quite a site for other guests. dress pants dress shirt and shoes and tie and under the hood of my 4runner

Haha thats funny! Thanks alot man, I appreciate the help! Now will my coil just up and fail on me at some point or what? Because like i said it starts up and runs fine. Im just hoping that it gets me home tonight from work! LOL

Between the manifold and the heater hose you can see two sensors. one is a single wire connection that the other has a special plug. it is the special plug

so did mine... remove the connection first and see if there is water in there. If there is a can of electrical connection cleaner from advance auto or autozone or any parts store will fix it. I just replaced mine due to not knowing how old it was and for 50 bucks woas worth the investment

Im just going to go ahead and replace both bc the 4runner has 207k on it and it also did sit for almost 3 years with a blow headgasket.

Is that a spark plug in the end of that heater hose? If so, why?

Hey guys!! Got it all fixed up today only cost me 65 bucks at auotzone.. Replaced the coil and the rear temp sensor! Which was a complete bitch to replace for a 15 dollar part. Haha but the sensor was actually dry rotted and actually broke off. So that's why my check engine light kept on flashing at me bc it was making a connection and then it wouldn't everytime I hit a bump. Lol

But I really appreciate the help fellas! You guys rock.
