trouble after water crossing

So I went to the beach yesderday with my 4Runner. I was doing some minor wheeling and went through a couple of water holes. I was not going very fast at all and the water was no more than knee deep. Well, on the second hole, my truck stalled out. I checked that there was no water in the intake and tried to start it again: still no start. It was turning but not starting. I figured it was electrical and just needed to dry out. It was (I guess) because it finally started after a few minutes. There was no problem again until I started the truck again to actually leave the beach. It had been sitting for a couple of hours since the last time I started it. It was very diffucult to start, then when it did it ran like crap. I had to rev super high when engaging the clutch, the idle was fairly rough, and it was real choppy during acceleration (almost felt like it would stall). Once the truck warmed up, though, everything was fine and normal. I figured something just needed to dry out some more. But this morning when I left for work, the same thing happened. What could it be? I'm gonna take it to the car wash after work to get the salt water off. Maybe there is some salty residue on something. There are some pictures of the water hole further down this thread about a week ago. It was significantly more shallow yesderday.

I had the same problem after heading through some water that was bumper deep. I was crawling through it and there was plenty of space between intake and water level. It ran fine just like yours till i got out of the park, got gas then tried to start her up again. It started hard, had a low idle and accelerated in sorta bursts if you will. Like i was hitching and un hitching a load. Anywho, got home ... and checked electricals. I was in muddy water ... a lil diff from salt water ... in any case. I checked the wires and distributor, and the cap had warped harcore from water splash due to the mechanical fan that sprayed it everywhere. New cap, new wires and clean running again.

Cool, thanks! I'll check it out. When I left work, everything seemed to be fine. I will still give things a closer look, though. I would hate to damage something in the long run.

Keep a can of WD40 in your truck. My old 22R loved ot get water in the cap. A little spray of wd40 will take care of the water

ouch...

since saltwater is super conductive i would say you may have gotten some into your ignition system. like people say on here, if the water was anywhere near the fan, its going to spray the water everywhere. i would take apart the distributor and make sure thats dry as well as all other igntion components

I have a factory 'booty' that covers the disto cap. I also have a spare if anyone is looking for one. It helps I guess as I have not had this happen to me.
