Transmission woes?

Ok, so if I keep my foot on the gas until I reach the speed I want, it shifts a little rough. But if I let off the gas right before I think the tranny is going to shift, it shifts smoothly.

Anyone else have a problem like this???

only 1000 on the fluid and stuff so probably not low, but may be worth checking the fluid level.
and by shifting rough, do you mean it's a quick hard shift or seems to take too long to shift and kind of hunts between gears like it can't choose one to go into?

I don't think it's a problem, I think it's just the difference between shifting with and without a load on the gears.

Was that transmission old though, and then you changed the fluid? If you have a tranny that hasn't had it's fluid changed regularly since the beginning of it's life, it's sometimes better to just leave it alone.

It shifts fast and hard I guess. Not really a problem searching for the right gear, mostly it just wants to max out a lot more in each gear. At least that's how it acts.
I've never changed the tranny fluid since I bought it (about 1500 miles ago) and I've thought about flushing it, but like T-1000 said, I'm a little worried I might stir some junk loose and make it worse...

I'm not really worried about it, just thought I might mention it and see if anyone else has this sort of 'problem' with their 3.0...

Thanks guys!

PS. Any more info is still appreciated

bear with me, I'm trying to figure out 'how' it is shifting.
so you're saying fast and hard. I'm guessing that maybe it is like the engine revs up and the transmission starts to shift, but then pauses and the rpm's just 'hover', then drops into the next gear quickly?

These are the exact symptoms I'm experiencing on my 87 4runner with AT and the 22re. It shifts seems to take longer than I would expect to shift. When it does, it acts like it can't make up its mind on what gear it wants. Going from 1st to 2nd seems to have no problems at all. But going to 3rd, it'll take longer than I think it should, then shift and drop the RPMs, the jump the RPMS back up a bit. Almost like it's shifting to 4th first then back down to 3rd.

It's got 193,000 on the original drivetrain. I don't know when the last trans service was done but the fluid looks pretty clean. Can I clean this up a bit by changing the fluids and putting in a new filter? I've done some research that makes me think I want to adjust/replace the TPS. I've also found some tech write-ups that recommend changing out the shift solenoids in the transmission. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Not my first toyota, but my first with an AT (a must for the wife who hates driving a standard).

over drive solenoid

I have a '93, 4x4 4 runner and it will not change gears int o fourth gear and I have the over drive change button on drive shifter and I have concluded that this is the problem ,my question is what does this type of problem cost normally... By the way live near Texas at a place called Galveston.
