Just bought an 89 4runner 22RE 5 speed! Then discovered that the transmission input shaft seal leaks a lot of gear oil out of the bell housing, down the clutch release fork, and all over the back of the clutch plate.

I finally got the transmission out and am about to put the new seal into the front transmission shaft cover to replace the original. However, I think this cover had been leaking too. It was sealed with some black RTVish sealant which was mostly squished out the sides of the front transmission shaft cover.

How should I seal this cover so it will be absolutely sure not to leak? I saw a post where marlin suggested using Ultra Gray Silicone, but I can't figure out how to use this without it all squishing out the side. This cover gets torqued quite snug. Can anyone with experience with this give me the technique of applying RTV for this application? Also, where exactly should I apply this on the cover. I had originally considered making my own gasket using paper gasket maker- bad idea?

Really appreciate any help- I don't want to pull that transmission again!

use ultra gray.

you have to clean old sealant off with a single edge razor, blade do not scratch surface.

clean the gasket surface with contact or carb cleaner, apply thin layer of sealant.

a small amount of sealer will squeeze out to let you know your good.

Thanks, I'm getting some Ultra Gray tonight. Is it best to snug the cover slightly and let the Permatex set up before tightening? I can't find torque specs for the front transmission shaft cover but it has to be pretty tight- won't all the ultra gray just squeeze out?

Taking the transmission out is a terrible experience- I want to make sure I fix this leak 100%

I personally like Toyota's red transmission sealant (FIPG). Not a bad idea to replace the rear main seal while you're in there.

Apply RTV to the front bearing cover and then install. Apply blue loctite to the front bearing cover bolts' threads, then install and tighten them to specified torque. The RTV that squeezes out during installation is just part of the process. You can either wipe off the excess, or just leave it. It really doesn't matter which. DO NOT allow for the RTV to set first. In fact, if you don't get the bolts torqued to specs within 5 minutes after application, the RTV needs to be removed and reapplied.

The torque specs for the bolts are:

G58 = 12 ft-lbf
W55/56 = 18 ft-lbf

Thanks, I'm going to pick up some fipg tomorrow and give it a shot.
I'm also considering getting some black fipg for the gasket on the rear main seal cover, which I'm going to replace as well. Is this a good idea or do you recommend I just use the paper gasket that comes with the rear main seal?

I don't know a 22R-E well enough to say which. The FSM says to use a "new gasket". So, though I would think you could use RTV/FIPG instead, I'm just not 100% sure you should.
