Transmission issues...manual shift a automatic.

My story: Bought 87 turbo 4 runner, blown 22rte, previous owner bolted a 22r and never hooked any EFI/exhaust or electrical. Currently got it running with turbo EFI on the 22r...took it out today and now my issue: only can start out in Low and manually shift the auto to 2nd...lift foot off gas...it shifts...then to Drive. Will not take off in drive. My first Toyota and there is no power from the transmission really. Torque converter? Didn't have any transmission fluid in it before...filled it up to specs. Does anyone have any idea on what the issue or issues could be? Few wires not hooked up in the ECU harness between the throttle body...no idea where they go.

Only way i can drive is to put it in first then shift from there. It does down shift and up shift if i am going fast enough. Test my TPS? First yota, so don't know what that is. So, no I haven't. If I am going 55 or so and punch it, will go through the gears, just can't take off in "D". Also, to shift manually or when it down shifts to second then i have to take my foot off the gas to let it shift...RPM go way to high.

toyota is not the only car that use tps. every electronic fuel injected car in the world use one.search here how to test and set the tps first and download the service manual, there is the procedure, diagrams and ecu connector pin points to do the trouble shooting.also extract the trouble codes if any.this trans is not an easy task.

I think these are known for having shift solenoids going bad in them. I would look up on how to check them out, I'm betting this is your problem
