I need to find out what transmission I've got in my rig, 89 4runner-22re-5 speed-4x4, and I don't have either the plate on the firewall or a plate on the door jamb.

This is what mine looks like I think although I believe that the shifter mounting plate for the t-case shifter is shaped a little different....


From what I've read it's a W56 but I can't tell if it's a C or D model and need to know before I take the plunge and order the TC twin stick for my t-case (I actually have no freaking clue why the transmission type would matter for a twin stick on a transfer case). http://www.trail-gear.com/shifter-dual.html

Got home and looked at some pictures of the top of the tranny/t-case that I have and noticed that the plate that holds the t-case shifter isn't square, it's rounded. In doing some more looking it seems that I have a top shift t-case and according to this http://www.trail-gear.com/shifter-dual.html the twin stick will work in ALL top shift t-cases.

I also read that the top shift t-case behind a W56 transmission was available up to 1988. If that's the case I'm wondering what else on my rig is older than 1989? Heck the brake calipers are from an 86 model.....

W56A/W56B have only one shifter mount on the transmission (transfer case shifter is on the transfer case).

That's it!!! Thanks for the picture and the help.

Now it's time to order the twin stick so that when the front locker goes in I can unlock the front if I need to make some sharp turns.

I know for a fact that the transmission on that picture is a forward shift r151f.
(Notice the ribs on the bellhousing and transfer adapter.It looks very similar to a g52)
If yours is a top shift than it is a w56b.
If its forward shift and both shifters share the same mounting plate then i'm guessing it is w56c.
Of course someone before you could have swapped trannies.

Edit: Aw man, I was 8 minutes late!!

Oh man the cunfusion just keeps getting worse. Ok on my tranny/t-case there are two seperate plates for the shifters. On Marlins site that picture is labeled as W56-A, the W56-B looks almost exactly like that and then the C and D trannies have one big plate for both shifters.

I haven't ordered anything yet so I'm not freaking out at the moment.... well maybe a little.

ok, back up.

First off, you need to determine where the transfer case shifter is located: transmission or transfer case.

transmission: "forward shift"
transfer case: "top shift"

From there, start looking at transmission pics. (hint: the transfer cases aren't attached in the url I provided earlier)

Shifter on the t-case so it's a top shift. That narrows it down to either the W56A or B correct? I did look at the pictures and the A and B look like mine. I'll probably need to crawl under it with a flashlight to be sure. I'm also guessing that taking a picture of it to post here is a good idea as well?

It's most likely a w56b since it's an 89.
W56a was on older trucks (85-86?)

I pulled a w56b from an 87 that will replace the g52 on mine.
