transmission ID and interchangable

I have a 1988 4cyl efi 5 speed trans is making noise and pops out of 1st gear if I don't hold the shifter. mine t-case is a top shift. I know where a foward shift trans and t-case is. can someone please tell me what trans is better and how they swap? do the shifter holes line up and are the drive shafts the same lenght?
