Transmission compatibility

Hello all. I know I've posted here a lot and asked a ton of questions, but am not here often to help others. For this I apologize, ever since my 4Runner was decommissioned I've spent my time elsewhere.

On the bright side I'm on the verge of buying a very clean 88 4Runner. Here is the deal...the transmission on my 84 seems much smoother than the one in the truck I'm looking to buy. The one in the 88 isn't that sloppy, nor does it grind gears, idk it could be I'm just not used to it. In any event, are the transmissions compatible form 84 to 88? I'm not sure if SA to IFS will cause any issues. Also, if I pull it, I may have it rebuilt since its got 200k miles on it. What does that usually go for?

The other "?" i had is about the 4 wheel drive. I engaged it while test driving and it felt like the 88 moves significantly quicker in 4L than the 84. In my 84 you can practically dump the clutch in 4L without stalling, this truck I almost stalled out. Is there an issue with it or is it different? I also noticed they went with auto-locking hubs in 88. Is the 4WD less effective in later models? I plan on swapping in my SFA from the 84 this is more of a curiosity thing.

Thanks all for the help. I'm not a mooch I will make an effort to be here more often to help others.

The big thing I'm worried about its the 4wd. Any help with that would be greatly appreciated.

it could just be that the shifter seat bushing is toast. Marlin crawler sells a really nice heavy duty one.
