Transfer case woes...
First let me start off with a
So long story as short as possible... My 89 4runner 22re 4x4... after work i was checkin my fluid levels before an oil change... and i checked my tcase... it was up to par just a bit of fluid poured out of the fill plug... i put the plug back on (didnt change gasket as i didnt have one) hand tightened it and then took my 24mm wrench to it and gave it about 1/4 of a turn and i heard a crack... i backed it off and 2 chunks fell off into the oil drain bucket!!!!... basically the threaded part and about 2inches behind it snaped in 2!!!.. it was a clean break so i cleaned it up and used a product similar to JB weld we have at work... used it (4 coats)... and prayed... i drove home 2 hours later and was amazed it doesnt seem to be leaking...
its a mickey mouse fix and id love to get a new tcase but the $$$ and finding one is an issue.. just thought id see if anyone else had this happen??? I cant be the only unlucky yota owner with old aluminum!!...
And if anyone had a tcase ... or better yet just the back plate they wanna part with id gladly buy it!!! im in the lower mainland of vancouver bc......
Lastly im curiuos... i know the tcase and tranny dont share fluid... So if the tcase were to run dry (via my mickey mouse epoxy not holding)... wut can i expect to happen to the tcase or tranny??
thanks guys ima get to bed now so i can get up for work in 6 hours :| wut a night

if it runs low on fluid, i bet your bearings wouldn't be too pleased. if you try to use it you might 'round' some gears in there. i don't think your tranny would have much of a problem (added stress wears out an automatic)

I should have one or two of the housing piece you need lying around. PM me an address and maybe we can work something out. I'm thinking ~$20 and shipping which shouldn't be too outrageous.

I ran my transfer case with about a 1/2 cup of muddy water to lubricate it for somewhere around 1500 miles. I wouldn't recommend it. My t-case couldn't have really cared less. I didn't even notice untill one of the bearings started making a faint squeal. It did end up having 3 bad bearings and one bad front output shaft seal(the one that let the oil out and the muddy water in). Long story short, replaced all the seals and most of the bearings. Still works perfect.

You should have no problems finding one of those for cheap. Those are just left over parts after a dual case set-up. I probably have one of them sitting in a box out in the garage like any other dual case owner.
