Transfer case Shifting

Transfer case Shifting
One of my trucks(1994 DLX 5speed Manual Hubs) has a little problem, at least I hope it is small.
Problem: When I go to shift my transfer case it seems to be free floating. It does not seem to be going into into the slots like it should. It is very difficult to the various settings. Not difficult to move, and does not grind or what not. Also, while driving you can move the transfer case shifter with out any thing happening.
I think that the alignment of the transfer case shifter is off(if that is even possible). Or, that there is something wrong with the linkage. What do you guys think, and thank you in advance.

I dont know a whole lot about t cases but i think there may be a pin in your linkage thats come out of its place or broken. That would probably be an easy fix. Someone a little more knowledgeable will chime in

Do I have to remove the Carpet for that? I took a quick look yesterday on how to remove the boot. I did not really take it apart. I have heard that you have to cut the carpet to get at it? Bushings huh? Will that require any major work? I have never experienced this. Danke!

Im really not sure on the process for the DLX models, hopfally a DLX owner will chime in..
Removing the shifter is pretty easy, no special tools needed.
The bushings (two) are easy to replace.
One snaps onto the end of the shifter, and one gets placed on where the shifter rides.
Check out www.marlincrawler.com for upgraded parts (everyone loves these things!)

The transfer case linkage on my 1993 4Runner auto used to need periodic adjustments to keep it shifting well. Same symptoms as you, I would try to shift, and it wouldn't quite go into 4x4. A tiny adjustment is all that was usually required.

Sorry I am kinda a newbie when it comes to transfer cases. I need all the help I can. I am going to look in the online service manual to see if it has anything on the adjustment process. Anyone know if I need to cut the carpet in order to replace the potential bad bushings? Danke!

Pull the plastic piece that goes around the shifters, should be 4 screws. Then un screw the 6 sheet metal screws that hold down the plate on top of the rubber boot (not the leather boot, the rubber one that actually touches the body) and lift up that plate. Unscrew both shift knobs and remove them then slide the rubber boot and retaining plate up and off of the shifters. Grab a 12mm (I think) socket, short extension and a ratchet and unscrew the 4 bolts holding the t-case shifter onto the housing. Pull up on the shifter.
Once you get it all pulled out you'll see the small bushing on the end of the shifter and the larger one sitting inside the "seat" where you insert the shifter.
I haven't done this to a t-case yet but I've done it to my tranny and it made a world of difference.
