Well, it's either the input shaft seal or the shifter seal. I'll have to wipe everything down and give it a spin around town to find out exactly where.

'87 22RE, just got it back from the transmission shop after they fixed a bad shift arm and fork in the transmission. I'm guessing they were either sloppy putting the shifter back in or they were a little overly aggressive mating it up to the transmission.

I figure the shifter seal will be relatively easy to replace, if that is it.

Anyone have any quick words of wisdom for the input seal, if that's the case?

I may head back to the shop and whine heavily to get them to help out on the cost. On the other hand, (if it's easy) I'd rather do it myself.

i just changed the seal (AKA shifter seat) in my transfer case too. and my car is also a 22re. but its a 92. i think are transmissions is different. but i took me a good while to put that new seal in. the dealer didnt have a code number for the seal for the transfer case so they just gave me the transmission seal. it fit kinda tight but when i got it in it still leaked. so im at that point where i dont know if the pressure in the transfer case is too high or what not. but if you figer out the problem then let me know too.

The shop did a seal-rebuild on the transfer case, gratis. yippee.

Well, the transmission and xfer case don't share fluid (manual transmission), so the proper answer to your question is "no".

BUT

There's a seal on the input shaft and I think that is where it was leaking, so in a way, the answer to your question is "yes".

The shop said they put some UV dye in and drove it around the block and there was UV dye all over the place, so he just did a complete re-seal.

I need to know this trick on the UV dye.... Cauze TC seems to have a similar problem even though we have re-sealed twice.... *sheesh*

yea i think the seal in between the transmission and t-case is leaking or something causeing the gear oil to move from point A to point B. i drained the oil out of the t-case today and there was about 2 quarts that came out of the fill hole.

..but thank ima get the seals replace on mines also.
