Some of the time, popping out of gear could be attributed to worn shifter bushings, bent shift fork and/or worn engine/transmission mounts. Most of the time, it's due to internal problems with the transmission resulting from forcing it into gear (bent fork / shifter / synchronizer).
Take it easy and it could last a fair while, or maybe not.

Well i get to speak from personal experience on this one. A couple of years after purchasing my truck it would pop out of gear like crazy and at the worst of times. I took a couple of years to go to college and move to a different city that didn't require a vehicle. So the old yoter sat for a few years until i returned. Upon returning i change fluids and gave the old girl a tune up and off i went driving it daily. Occasionally it would pop out of first but i refused to take it to a shop and nursed it along for 5 years. Well to say the least it got worse and comparing price to have a shop rebuild and the down time involved and just buying a new w56 transmission. i purchased a new one for 18,00 and never looked back. Moral of this boring story? Can you drive it for a while and be fine ? probably. Will you need to fix the issue in the future? yes. I would purchase the vehicle but at a far discounted price due to the transmission problems and the repairs needed in the future. If the seller doesn't want to budge on the price move on and find another toy to feed your addiction.
