Tranny Swap
Well, I found a good (hopefully, won't know til I get it in) used tranny and will be swapping it with the one in my 87 runner soon. It seems like a pretty straight forward job, but thought a ask about a few details that I am unclear on:
- 1. I'm getting a new gasket for between the tranny and xfer case. Do folks usually put that in dry, with silicone, grease?
- Thought I'd take care of the leaky rear seal on the xfer while I was doing all this. From the factory manual, looks like they bolt a special tool onto the rear flange to take the nut off. Anyone tried an impact wrench? Anything special I should know before I start getting to this seal?
- What type of lube is best for these trannies and xfers? I've read that one should avoid GL-5 oil as it is too slick. Also it seems quite a few folks are using synthetics. Is there a consensus on what is the best?
Thanks
