I have an 88 4runner with a w56 tranny with about 170,000 on it. It just recently started slipping outta first gear and i want to get it rebuilt this summer.

how much should I be expecting to pay?

keep in mind i'm not going for a MC rebuild kit or anything (however, i am getting that heavy duty clutch they make...)

i cant tell u how much to rebuild a manual but to have mine rebuilt is gonna be about 1800 so i am going to guess about anywhere from 1000 to 1500 thats just a guess it will be different depending on where u go just stay away from MR TRANSMISSION they will rip u off big time i have a friend that took his truck there and they charged him 800 dollars for a new torque converter and 600 dollars for a rebuild kit and 900 dollars to remove and install the trans he got ripped big time

I can get the tranny off myself and replace the clutch myself... but that's where it ends.

I want to bring my tranny to someone with an already bought rebuild kit and say "Here, fix this."

I was thinking someone could rebuild it for around 400$... maybe that's crazy...

I mean a clutch takes like 15 minutes to replace once the tranny is off...

I would try a marlin shifter seat and bushing kit first.

I got my W56 rebuilt for about $995 with a 90 day warranty. That was me taking it out and putting it back in... it will be more if you have them do that part!!

If they are going to remove it and put it back in...I would say around $1500. Put a new clutch in,pressure plate, throw out bearing, have the flywheel resurfaced, and maybe a slave cyl while you are there, you are going to have the tranny out anyways, so why risk it all going out in 3 months and having to do the labor again!!

Now that I read that other post, you can probably get it done for that much...if you bring them your kit!

around here transmission shop wont touch the trans if it is already out of the truck nor will they use ur kit they lose alot of money like that but that is around here it could be different other places but that is what i have run into

x2 on testing out the MC shifter bushing kit. cheaper and faster than any other repair for that kind of thing.

every region could be different so i'd call around and ask some shops how much they charge. $1000-1800 would be my guess if they had to remove/replace the unit in the truck. when i was calling around i couldn't find any shops that would use the MC rebuild kit and warranty the trans with it since it's not their parts so i decided OEM parts were the best alternative. i found a place that did my rebuild for $1500 with a 1yr/12k mile warranty. i found a coupon on their website that got me a free clutch and flywheel resurfacing. on a side note, i had to take my truck back due to input noise coming back (my original problem) and in the end got myself a completely different housing with all new internal parts because the mechanic couldn't get the input noise to go away. for some reason it still have some input noise when the truck is cold so he gave me a 2yr warranty and some redline synthetic instead of the standard gear oil.

Mine was a hair under $2000 which included clutch kit. That comes with a 5yr/50,000mi nearly-unconditional warranty.

Although I think they bunged my xfer case input seal the last time it was in. sigh.

I like the MC shifter bushing kit idea.

if that helps you guys just saved me a whole lot of time and money.

however i need a new clutch so if it turns out i do need a tranny rebuild then so be it.

the shifter seat is like 10 bucks and i'm definitely going to get that.

can anyone give me the link to that bushing kit?

Just get a Marlin rebuilt unit. Same price as having yours done with your kit.

Then just replace it if not that.
You can get a tranny and tcase for about $200 around here so why rebuild?
