What kind of oil does tranny and the rear end and front take?

Plenty of opinions on this, but I use Redline MTL in the transmission and (I think) Redline 75W-90 everywhere else.

It is in the manual/FSM.

Manual trans or auto?

Assuming you have a 5speed, i would say 75-90 anything will work just fine. I use Royal Purple in my Race cars (toyota MR2) and have yet to experience a problem.

Amsoil Manual Transmission & Transaxle fluid 75w90 (GL-4) for my transmission & Amsoil 75w90 longlife Synthetic Gear Lube (GL-5) for everything else (Transfer case, Front/rear diffs). I could also use the Transmission/transaxle fluid in my transfer case if I want as I believe it can take either a GL-4 or GL-5.

Next gear oil change I'll probably be putting Amsoil Manual Transmission & Transaxle fluid 75w90 GL-4 in my Transmission & transfer case, and Amsoil 75w90 Severe Gear in my Front & Rear Diff's.

Second the Amsoil selection. Do a comparison on the different lubes. Living in Montana (gets to -25 occassionally) I want a lube that actually stays fluid at extreme temps. You can order direct from Amsoil. For $10 become a dealer for 6 months and the discount will more than cover the shipping. I needed 5 qts of each (GL4 and GL5) to fill the differentcials, transmission and transfer case. Cost under $100. Pricey, but good product.

sooo, me being a cheap ass and dont want to spend more than i have to,,,,i can get by using regular 80w-90 in my trans, tcase, and diffs?? 81 manual 4 speed thanks

I stepped up to synthetic a few years ago and have a much easier time shifting when its cold. 75/90 valvoline. The only downer to synthetic is that it always seems to leak more

rear diff leaks so i just put whatever i have laying around to top it off.

after my recent tranny-fluid change, I don't know how long the trans is going to last n-e-way (see here), so I just put generic brand 80w90 in it, and 75w90 in the t-case. Just fixed a leaky rear-diff gasket and put the same in it, cheapo 80w90, but it'll be getting re-geared and locked in the near future (along with the front diff), so I'll be putting the higher-dollar stuff in it when that time comes.


after asking the same question here on YT myself in the not-too-distant past, I'm probably going to go with Redline, because so many people highly recommend it
